"The Cretaceous" is the fifth and final issue of Godzilla: Rage Across Time, as well as the final original Godzilla comic by IDW Publishing until 2021. It was released on November 23, 2016.

Plot

While at a Northern Israeli dig site in 2016, Benjamin Thompson and Nikki Kasumi discover Homo erectus and Velociraptor remains on the same ridge, which should have been impossible.

In the Late Cretaceous Period, kaiju run rampant. Ebirah and Gezora battle in the ocean, while Rodan eats a Tyrannosaurus rex. Rodan is shot down by a stray beam fired by Godzilla during a fight with Anguirus, Varan and Baragon. Kumonga prepares to eat Rodan's remains while Mothra and Battra battle in the sky. This continues until Keizer Ghidorah falls from the sky in a meteor shower. Keizer Ghidorah defeats all the monsters and transforms into Monster X to fight Godzilla and Anguirus. Anguirus is soon taken out, and Godzilla fights and nearly defeats Monster X, but is distracted briefly by an incoming fleet of Xilien UFOs. Monster X uses this opportunity to tip Godzilla over into a volcano before morphing back into Keizer Ghidorah and joining up with the rest of the UFOs. The fleet arrives on Earth, and an Xilien onboard sets two Homo erectus free, which he gives an axe to build and fight with and a fruit to plant. He then informs them that when the planet is ready, they will be back to harvest it. However, just as the Xiliens leave Earth, Godzilla emerges from the ground and incinerates both of the Homo erectus and a nearby Velociraptor with magma.

• This comic marks the first appearance of the Xiliens in any of IDW's Godzilla comics; the aliens became frequent antagonists in the company's second run of Godzilla comics which began in 2021.
• Godzilla's battle with Varan, Baragon and Anguirus is a reference to Godzilla X Varan, Baragon and Anguirus: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, a draft of Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack.
• The retailer incentive cover depicts Godzilla attacking Rome, where the previous issue was set, suggesting the cover art was intended for the fourth issue.
• IDW reprinted this issue in the 2022 one-shot Godzilla: Best of Godzilla. The one-shot was in turn reprinted in 2024 in the hardcover collection Godzilla's 70th Anniversary, which won the 2025 Eisner Award for Best Anthology.
