Plot
Elvira's spaceship deploys its shield against SpaceGodzilla's breath weapon. The Xiliens return fire with a salvo of Stingers, rockets which open to unleash hordes of spider-like machines. They swarm onto SpaceGodzilla as Elvira demands the ship fire again. Rebel ships suddenly leap out of hyperspace, cannons blazing. Elvira orders Light Fighters to sortie while the rest of their forces focus on bringing the kaiju under control.
On the mushroom moon of Nitrus 5, S.S. Mechagodzilla sits idle. Ayan, reading a comic book aboard the ship, is equally idle until she suddenly receives a call from Frey, asking for an urgent favor. Rohan and Gen's maintenance work is interrupted as Mechagodzilla blasts into space with Ayan at the controls. Gen quickly deduces that Ayan considers Frey more than a friend, while Rohan is aghast that she would think of defying the Xiliens. They exit hyperspace and enter a chaotic scene—rebels and Xiliens attacking each other while SpaceGodzilla blasts everything he sees. Rohan and Gen wrestle with Ayan for the controls and barely manage to avoid SpaceGodzilla's ray, only for it to hit Frey's craft instead. Realizing the ship is doomed, Rohan agrees to use Mechagodzilla to evacuate the crew as Light Fighters surround them. SpaceGodzilla, meanwhile, stops firing as he comes under the Xiliens' control. An underling alerts Frey to Mechagodzilla's presence, surprising her. She orders her forces to let it escape, saying she has a better idea. As her crew climbs between ships, Frey tackles Ayan in joyous greeting and thanks her for coming.
Mechagodzilla soars away as the ship explodes. It touches down at the rebel base on Tama 7's crystal desert. Rohan hurries the rebels off Mechagodzilla, wanting to leave as quickly as possible. Gen agrees, but realizes Ayan is missing. Rohan aggressively searches the base for her as Frey shows her the giant magma worms who dwell beneath the crystals. She worries about the Xiliens finding the creatures and weaponizing them, remarking that it feels impossible to stop them sometimes. She describes one recent incident where the kaiju eggs they bought to keep them away from the Xiliens were promptly stolen; Ayan realizes with horror that she and Rohan were the thieves in question. Frey strokes Ayan's scar and tenderly kisses her then, but Ayan departs with an apology. She returns to Mechagodzilla and wakes Gen and Bug up with the announcement that Gen is working for the Xiliens. As she realizes he's standing behind her, Gen tells him that Ayan knows now. Rohan draws his pistol and fires.

Trivia
- The retailer incentive cover pays homage to District 9 (2009). The King Ghidorah sign featured on it is lifted from an image of the S.H. MonsterArts King Ghidorah 2019 figure.
- The comic Ayan reads is Godzilla: Monster Island Summer Camp, which shares its illustrator Oliver Ono with the Starship Godzilla series.
- Frey has toys of Minilla and Battra on the dashboard of her ship. Though the latter has not appeared in this continuity, the former was introduced a month earlier in Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone #5.
- The name of the storyline started by this issue, "Return of the King," may be inspired by The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). A theatrical rerun of the Lord of the Rings films by Fathom Events coincided with the issue's release.[2]
