Plot
Annie punches a classmate at Cooper Academy for touching the island mementos she keeps in her locker, imagining him as a Nightboy. Following her expulsion, Irene drives her home and tries to explain to her that she can't keep living on high alert, but Annie is defiant, viewing the village as a cage and still angry that her mother left Charlie behind on Skull Island.
On that same island, Kaia slays a hippopotamus-like monster and cuts Charlie out of its stomach. She admonishes him for not moving quicker as he remarks how much she reminds him of Annie. A centipede monster bursts out of the ground, forcing them to flee as she remarks that the spike in attacks is due not just to Kong's absence, but an imperceptible disease spreading through the island. After they depart, a black substance settles on the hippopotamus monster's corpse, causing its eyes to turn black. Sam and Irene watch through binoculars as Annie once again sneaks out of her room and into the barn housing Dog. Sam urges Irene to be patient with Annie, given what she's had to learn to survive since she was a young child, while Irene worries that Annie is right and will not be able to readjust to civilization. After greeting Dog, Annie opens the door on the opposite end of the barn to reveal Mike, who has secretly chartered a boat to take them to Skull Island tomorrow night.
Kaia and Charlie return to Kong's sanctuary, where Cap reports that the Titan's wounds are healing and he's starting to eat again, though he's still weak. Kong shares Kaia's sense that a new Titan is trying to conquer the island in his absence and gaining in strength. A massive form rises out of the Skull Island muck, sending other creatures scattering. Irene takes Annie to her own gravestone, as well as that of her father August, in the hopes that she'll understand what Irene went through when she thought she had lost them both. Irene is determined not to lose her a second time. Nonetheless, that night Annie puts on her old jacket and climbs into the circus truck Mike obtained to house Dog. The driver is a friend of Mike's who he introduces as Guy; to Annie's delight, he's unfazed by the extreme dangers on Skull Island. Irene and Sam surreptitiously follow them; though they've been aware of their plans, Irene is disappointed that Annie didn't leave a note.
An army of monsters, their eyes all black, overrun Kaia's village as the inhabitants flee. Etana delivers the news to Kaia as Kong roars a challenge to the would-be Titan usurper, Yuggoth, who hears him from the surface and snarls back. Annie, Mike, and Guy reach the docks and meet the shady captain Mike hired, Druid. She's unimpressed by his ship, while he's dismayed by the sight of Dog, who's too heavy to board. They're interrupted by the arrival of a group of mercenaries who they initially believe are the police, but turn out to be in Irene's employ. She offers to join them on their rescue mission, but only aboard the massive ship she's chartered, Leviathan. To calm Druid, she hires him as added muscle.
Mike, Cap, and Kaia spot Yuggoth atop a snowy mountain as Kong climbs towards it. Kong finds the high ground and leaps at the fungal Titan, but it intercepts him with a swing of its arm, knocking him to the ground. Kaia seems to share his pain, lamenting that he's not ready for battle yet. Yuggoth lumbers towards Kong and wraps a hand around his throat, branches nearing his eyes. Kong finds the strength to tear off one of its legs, causing it to stumble down the side of the mountain. Charlie cheers Kong's victory, but Cap wonders what the exertion has cost him.
