Trivia
- King Kong and Skull Island have been referenced or alluded to in numerous prior Rocketeer works:
- Dave Stevens' cover art for the first hardcover Rocketeer collection depicted the title character as a giant with biplanes flying around him. Similarly, he portrayed Lothar as a giant gripping the Rocketeer for the cover of The Rocketeer Adventure Magazine #2, with a biplane and the New York City skyline in the background.
- In the 1991 film adaptation, Lothar is described as "that King Kong gentleman".
- Upon first seeing the Rocketeer flying in The Rocketeer & The Spirit: Pulp Friction, Ellen Dolan remarks, "Oh! I know! They're making a movie! Like 'King Kong' with trick photography!"
- In the 2013 miniseries The Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom, the Rocketeer foils a villainous plot to unleash dinosaurs from Skull Island on New York City. John Sunlight alludes to Kong in his monologue: "It's said that, not so many years ago, an expedition [to the island] captured a giant gorilla and brought it back to New York, where it ran amok. But of course, such stories sell papers, and needn't be strictly factual."
- Series artist Jacob Edgar based his King Kong design on Bill Sienkewicz's rendition of the Marvel supervillain Kingpin.[1]
