Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone #5 is a comic book from IDW Publishing. It was published on December 24, 2025.[1]

Description

Enter the Deadzone! The mysterious kai-sei infected wasteland the government would have you believe is uninhabited…but do you believe that?

The Wanderer—a half-man, half-kaiju hybrid—is just about the only being brave enough to travel across this strange world. But as of late, he’s not traveling alone. He’s discovered two children with the ability to control kaiju!

In this issue, our crew stumbles upon a kaiju fight club. The only way for them to make it out alive…is to win![1]

Plot

A huge truck staffed by gossiping mutants unloads Sherry Dottsman and Runt into a warehouse, where they are immediately trapped in a cage. They ignore Sherry as she pleads to be freed. Runt reassures her that Glasseater and the Wanderer will be coming to rescue them. They become aware of monstrous forms around them as Hue, their three-eyed keeper, introduces himself. He remarks that they seem more spirited than the other captive monsters, which should please the Mayor, and muses that the monotony of the Deadzone inspires terrible deeds. Meanwhile, the Wanderer and Glasseater surveil the town from the surrounding forest as she tries to convince him to part ways with Sherry at their earliest convenience, so as to better develop their dynamic as a trio. Emerging into the light, they are surprised to find themselves on an ordinary-looking suburban street, complete with ice cream truck. Onlookers quickly gather, and one, spotting the Wanderer's tail, rushes for a phone. He drags Glasseater away from a pair of kids once she seems ready to pick a fight, remarking that he has a bad feeling about the town.

The alarmingly cheerful Mayor emerges to greet them; the Wanderer, declining to shake his hand, tells him they're looking for their friends. He offers to let the Wanderer attend the town's impending public forum to ask the community for leads, though the event is strictly adults-only. The Wanderer agrees to hand Glasseater off to the town's youth chaperones, believing they can cover more ground if they split up. She rages at him as the Mayor leads him away. Doors quickly lock behind both the Wanderer and Glasseater as they realize they've fallen into a trap. The Mayor declares to the Wanderer that in this town, they employ monsters, while the static on a television set hypnotizes Glasseater and the town's children. The townsfolk overwhelm the Wanderer, putting him in chains and lifting him via crane into an arena where baying crowds await. Doors open to reveal his opponent, Baragon, as well as Sherry, her presence here horrifying the Wanderer. She accidentally kicks him to start the match, then cowers from Baragon as he charges. The Wanderer leaps, slashing at Baragon's eye. Suddenly, Church of Godzilla helicopters appear overhead, with Mother A observing the scene atop a winged reptile.

Alone with Hue, Runt lambasts his captor for leading Sherry to her death. Hue explains that while he only wanted to study the monsters of the Deadzone and build a sanctuary for them, the Mayor demanded they be used for entertainment as he seized more and more power. Though disgusted by what he's become, he feels he's too weak to stand up to the Mayor. Runt replies that he once felt the same way, but has done things he couldn't have imagined since his adventures began, and offers to use his own powers to help Hue rebel. Remarking how eloquent he is, Hue sets him free. He believes that none of the monsters held at the warehouse are powerful enough to overcome the Mayor's forces. Runt quips, "Where's Godzilla when you need it?", causing Hue to remark he may indeed have a way to bring the King of the Monsters to them. They stand before a caged, muzzled Minilla.
