"Chapter IV: The Jungle"[a][b] is the fourth issue of Dynamite Entertainment's Kong: The Great War. It was published on November 29, 2023.[1]

Description

WAR MAY BE HELL - BUT KONG IS THE DEVIL! Deep in the jungles of Skull Island, the crew of U-184 survives (as best they can) under the constant threat of grisly death, ferocious prehistoric predators, and, never far behind them... KONG! The pressure mounts as they are steadily overtaken by fear, violence, and disease - but hope flickers in the distance! Will they find the strength to persevere? Or will their bones be added to the endless cascade of human remains that Skull Island leaves for posterity? Only acclaimed author ALEX COX and superstar artist TOMMASO BIANCHI know for sure - but soon all will be revealed![2]

Plot

During the crew of the U-184's fourth day stranded on an uncharted Pacific island, the ship's captain asserts to himself that he and his crew are in Hell, where they have been sent to be punished. He reflects on how death has followed his crew from war with France, to England, to the United States, to this island. He then notices the gargantuan ape that had been pursuing his crew looming overhead. He bids the survivors to run, and one man chooses to fire on the beast. Agitated, Kong squishes the man to death in his hand.

As the men run, the captain thinks about how in the outside world he and his men were decorated, battle-hardened soldiers of a powerful empire, and how here on the island none of that matters. The giant ape exists as nothing more than a reminder of their powerless in the face of the world's truest, most raw nature. As they run, the engineer Roland falls to his knees and vomits bile and blood. He asserts that he is not going to survive, and expresses remorse that a tropical illness should be what kills him after everything he had survived. The captain allows the engineer to lean on him, and insists it is just malaria, which would be treated with Quinine from their medical supplies. In reality, the captain knows there are no such supplies, but he refuses to allow Roland to fall behind and be eaten by whatever horrors the jungle is hiding. All the while he knows that the ape is on their tail and not even making an effort to keep pace because it knows they will never escape him.

Soon they come to the plains surrounding the skull-shaped mountain, and the captain insists that they will be seen if they light a signal fire at its top. The old seaman Werner takes a look at the plain, and remarks that while it looks safe enough, they all know better than to assume it is. Just after having said this, the heads of several large, colorful, ostrich-like birds pop up from the tall grass, and Werner swears. The shadow of the giant ape looms over them, causing the birds to scatter, and Werner swears again as he looks at the beast standing over the tree line. He ushers the men forward, insisting that they will be able to make it to the mountain.

Roland then tells the captain that he knows what to do if he wants to survive. The captain agrees that he knows, but will only do it if it is what Roland wants. Roland agrees by saying that he can buy him some time. The captain puts the sailor down, insisting that his family would know of his heroic sacrifice. Roland insists that he not tell them how he really died, and the captain agrees and salutes the man before running. The captain settles on telling his family that Roland died a hero against overwhelming American forces if he survives to write letters to the families of his fallen men.

In the plain, Roland stands up, spits out some blood, and takes aim with his pistol at the ape, still standing over the trees, watching the men scatter. He lands a shot right into Kong's right temple. The ape is unfazed and scratches the impact for a moment before grabbing Roland, crushing him in his fist, and biting off his torso. The captain addresses the other four survivors, Hugo, Werner, Josef, and Hansel, insisting that they will make it to the mountain by nightfall, and get off the island. Kong stands over a small collection of skulls and helmets, Roland's blood still fresh on his lips, but a scent catches his attention and he begins to pursue it. All the while, for the first time the captain begins to feel like they have a chance at surviving.
