Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone #4 is a comic book from IDW Publishing. It was published on November 12, 2025.[1]

Description

Enter the Deadzone! The mysterious kai-sei infected wasteland the government would have you believe is uninhabited... but do you believe that?

The Wanderer — a half-man, half-kaiju hybrid — is just about the only being brave enough to travel across this strange world. But as of late, he’s not traveling alone. He’s discovered two children with the ability to control kaiju!

In this issue, our traveling circus of freaks come across a 40-foot woman who’s in love with the King of the Monsters! Can our crew help this heartbroken giantess?[1]

Plot

Thirteen-year-old Sherry Dottsman visits a comic store in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she is delighted to discover a comic book adaptation of a TV series she loves, Tragic Chronicles. Leaving with her purchases, she stumbles into a group of girls who mock her for reading comics. She stands up to confront them, only for them to scream and flee. She turns to find Godzilla behind her and gazes at it in adoration.

The Wanderer, Glasseater, and Runt cross a Deadzone desert, both of the kids severely dehydrated. Glasseater suddenly spots a stream of water, which they follow to Sherry, now 40 feet tall and sobbing wildly. She asks them if they've seen Godzilla. After one of her tears knocks the trio over, the Wanderer asks if Glasseater or Runt could control her, revolting them both, as she's simply an enlarged human. Runt is fascinated by her, asking her name and her life story. She explains that she became enamored with Godzilla after her close encounter, researching the kaiju extensively and ultimately running away from home to try and meet it again in the Deadzone. She took a bus to the edge of the Deadzone walls and paid a woman to smuggle her across via tunnel. Believing that multiple layers would shield her from the high levels of Kai-Sei in the area, she went to bed in a tent. She awoke the next day to find that the tent and all its contents, including herself, had grown massively. Though she believes that this freak accident has only improved her romantic chances with Godzilla, she's been unable to find it. Runt is awed that she came to the Deadzone for love, while Glasseater finds her crush disturbing and demands that she confirm found a way into the Deadzone from outside. Sherry is surprised to learn that Glasseater and Runt were born in the Deadzone instead of sneaking in themselves, confirming the online theories that human societies have survived there. The Wanderer is outraged to learn that the outside world thinks the Deadzone has been depopulated, which Sherry attributes to a government cover-up. Claws swinging, he demolishes nearby trees in fury. Runt asks him if he actually thought someone was coming to help; he replies in the negative, to the kids' skepticism.

Sherry shows the trio her tent. Runt is awed by the data she's gathered on Godzilla, while the Wanderer eyes her weapons, which she's accumulating to keep them away from poachers. He explains to Glasseater that unlike poachers, he only kills kaiju for survival, as the Deadzone is their home, not humanity's. He orders the kids to move out, but Sherry guilts them into staying the night, as she's been alone for six months. Runt, standing in Sherry's shirt pocket, stays up with her as they bond over both being runaways. A flaming arrow suddenly rips the tent and quickly sets the structure on fire. The Wanderer orders them out of the tent. No sooner has Sherry explained the cause of the fire than an unseen force restrains her and drags her and Runt out of sight. The Wanderer holds Glasseater back, given the apparent scale of the threat. She assumes that he means to leave Runt behind, but he instead assumes his larger form and asks her to hop on. She tearfully hugs him and they embark on their rescue mission. From a distance, however, two members of the Church of Godzilla spot them and prepare to inform Mother A.
