Godzilla #5 is a comic book from IDW Publishing. It was published on December 3, 2025.[1]

Description

Godzilla. Jacen Braid. Yacumama. Lament. The biggest fight of the year is happening in the pages of Godzilla #5. As Jacen Braid finally starts to understand Rumi's kaiju pressure point technique, the rest of G-Force shows up with two new kaiju — and one of them can talk! Will the combined might of Jacen, Lament, the leech kaiju Yacumama, and G-Force be enough to kill Godzilla? And... what happens if Godzilla dies? Find out in Godzilla #5![1]

Plot

Godzilla grapples with Yacumama as Jacen Braid muses that the leech kaiju might prevail before he can kill Godzilla himself. Dr. Rumi Chiba and Riviera scream at each other while Godzilla cuts into Yacumama with atomic breath. Chiba is furious that Riviera is working with Lament, a kaiju, and harnessing the same leeches that drove Godzilla to attack American cities; he responds that Godzilla remains his priority, and the rest of the kaiju will fall in line when the King of the Monsters is gone. Chiba is suddenly overcome by a surge of psychic energy. She tells Braid that she glimpsed an experiment that attempted to harness Kai-Sei but allowed an Anti-Kai-Sei to enter the world instead. Lament is its avatar, no less than death itself, and Godzilla, rather than fleeing from Yacumama, was trying to stop it and its master from killing the planet. Lament raves that Chiba is a tool of Godzilla and Yacumama is humanity's chance to take power back from Godzilla. Both kaiju and Riviera goad Braid into attacking Godzilla while Yacumama has it on the ropes, but Chiba weakly adds that Yacumama's hunger will never be sated: not unlike Braid's anger, if he lets it run uncontrollably.

Braid makes his decision, knocking back Lament with a blast of energy. Jet Jaguar, ignoring Riviera, follows Chiba's orders to target Yacumama, pulling it off Godzilla. Nuki prepares to follow suit, though Incense frets that she'll be demoted back to Deadzone patrol for disobeying orders. She fires on Yacumama anyway, urging him to prove himself to her by doing the right thing. After stamping his foot, he takes a breath and starts a livestream, announcing his open rebellion in torching Yacumama. Braid is eager to join the three G-Force members, but Chiba reminds him that the leech will only feed on his Kai-Sei energy. She psychically convinces Godzilla to retreat, and the kaiju tosses Yacumama away before stomping down a tunnel. Riviera rages at his team, who he sees as having thrown away their best chance to kill the monster that has haunted America for decades. Chiba agrees that far too many lives have been lost fighting Godzilla—because he and his country sees violence as the only option. Yacumama suddenly grabs Nuki, tackles Jet Jaguar, and bounds after Godzilla, with Braid in hot pursuit. Picking up Nuki's gun, Chiba follows with Jet Jaguar and Incense, giving Riviera the choice of waiting for Lament to recover or helping them save Nuki. He hesitates, but ultimately follows them.

Briefly going airborn, Jacen screeches to a halt in an open cavern. Nuki, pinned to a wall, bites through a tentacle to warn Braid of a trap. Yacumama nonetheless slams him into a wall. Unable to fight back with Kai-Sei energy, he can only ask the universe for help—and Godzilla answers, headbutting the leech. Braid convinces Godzilla to energize him with atomic breath, then chase after Yacumama together. Godzilla tears into it with his claws and teeth while Braid drives a pipe into one of its heads. The rest of G-Force frees Nuki before joining the offensive. When only one small leech remains, Braid lets Godzilla deliver the final stomp.

Lament sarcastically congratulates G-Force for saving Godzilla instead of killing it, then offers to explain the origins of Braid to which the organization is ignorant. The kaiju recounts how a group of engineers gathered near the Deadzone and tried to concentrate Kai-Sei energy in the hopes of healing the sick and even curing cancer, displaying an image of the site on Incense's phone. The head engineer had terminal cancer herself, but her hopes were dashed when Godzilla sensed the experiment and destroyed the station. A voice offered her a way to survive as she lay dying—become a kaiju and serve it—and she agreed for a chance to see her son again. The image on Incense's phone then changes to a portrait of Braid and his mother. Realizing that the Godzilla attack that upended his life was, despite Chiba's assurances, entirely personal, Braid furiously blasts Godzilla to the surface.
