Godzilla vs. Avengers is the fifth installment in Marvel Comics' Godzilla vs. Marvel collaboration. It was published on June 18, 2025.[1]

Description

The original New Avengers return to face an unstoppable enemy – GODZILLA! In the aftermath of a massive battle between Godzilla, Fin Fang Foom, the Avengers and Jet Jaguar, S.H.I.E.L.D. tries to make sense of what went down – but everyone’s telling a different story! What really happened during that fateful clash? Find out when Earth’s Mightiest Heroes take on Earth’s Mightiest Kaiju![1]

Plot

Aboard a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier hovering above the ravaged town of Astoria, Oregon, Deputy Director Maria Hill interrogates the New Avengers. She blames them for contributing to the destruction during the battle between Godzilla and Fin Fang Foom near the town.

The heroes push back, arguing that while they may have caused some collateral damage, they also saved many lives. Unprepared for the sheer scale of the threat, they did their best to minimize harm. Spider-Man struggled due to the lack of tall buildings for web-swinging, Luke Cage narrowly avoided being crushed by debris, and Wolverine suffered severe burns from Godzilla's atomic breath. Iron Man regrets his decision to prioritize Fin Fang Foom, while Spider-Woman laments that Hulk and Thor weren't there to help.

During the chaos, Jet Jaguar arrived and successfully separated the two monsters, blasting Godzilla and moving the fight away from the town. The Avengers questioned whether he was on their side, but Iron Man recognized him as an invention of Goro Ibuki and concluded he must be here to help. Jet Jaguar then hurled Fin Fang Foom toward a bridge, forcing Spider-Man to cushion the impact with his webs. When Captain America told Spider-Woman to assist, she curtly reminded him that she couldn't shoot webs.

Back in the present, Agent Hill grows frustrated with the New Avengers' bickering as they pass around Jet Jaguar's head and suspects that something's amiss. She moves her questioning to Kaiju Chasers United, a group consisting of Bonnie Ibuki, Ohgene, and Sebastian. Bonnie, Goro's niece, explains their mission to confront the rising kaiju threat using Jet Jaguar, who they rebuilt. Hill is skeptical that a group of young civilians could build a giant robot capable of growing to 150 feet without Pym Particles, though Captain America is impressed by the feat.

After Hill mistakenly calls the group by the wrong name, Sebastian and Hill argue briefly before Bonnie interjects. She clarifies that the new Jet Jaguar was assembled from salvaged material but didn't perform as intended, ultimately putting lives at risk. They later traced the issue to a flaw in the AI, which allowed Godzilla to tear off Jet Jaguar's arm and enabled Fin Fang Foom to escape from Spider-Man's webs. Iron Man, Luke Cage, and Spider-Man tried futilely to hold back Godzilla until he swung Jet Jaguar at Fin Fang Foom and launched him towards the bridge, where Captain America shielded civilians.

The heroes eventually trapped Fin Fang Foom in a force field. Agent Hill orders him to put down a truck and attempts to interrogate him, though she is annoyed by the New Avengers and Kaiju Chased United's running commentary about the creature's gender and shorts. Fin Fang Foom claims that he had been napping on the bridge when Godzilla arrived and began trampling through Astoria. Declaring himself the true King of the Monsters, Fin Fang Foom saw Godzilla as a challenger and followed, though Godzilla largely ignored him at first, refusing to turn around while smacking him with his tail. Hill is aghast that he started the fight over a title, and asks the New Avengers to explain what happened to Godzilla.

After regrouping, the New Avengers made a final push to lure Godzilla away from land, with Iron Man, Captain America, Wolverine, and Spider-Woman all attacking him simultaneously. The monster returned to open water, and Iron Man was quick to take credit for the success of his plan. Wolverine, meanwhile, furiously demanded that Godzilla return. Luke questioned Wolverine's mental state, prompting Spider-Woman to quip that his brain might have been burned along with his body. Captain America warned Kaiju Chasers United never to deploy untested technology again, while Wolverine sarcastically reassured them that Agent Hill would surely be understanding.

Trivia

  • While Godzilla has faced several versions of the Avengers in the past—the original Avengers, West Coast Avengers, and Mighty Avengers―this marks his first meeting with the New Avengers.
    • Of the members featured in this issue, Iron Man, Captain America, and Spider-Man previously appeared in the original Marvel Godzilla series, though only the former had fought Godzilla directly. Spider-Man and Wolverine also battled Godzilla in previous installments of Godzilla vs. Marvel, making them the first returning combatants in the series.
  • This issue's Godzilla King of the Monsters Homage Variant Cover recreates the cover of Marvel's Godzilla #23, complete with Wolverine speaking a line similar to Vision's.
