Plot
In the year 1917, the captain of the Imperial German Navy submarine U-184 regains consciousness on the shores of an uncharted Pacificisland. He does not remember much, but is fairly certain he is not dead. He walks down the beach to see it is strewn with bones belonging to humans and beasts alike, alongside the bodies of his crew and the wreckage of the u-boat. He remembers the carnage on the beach and tries to retreat to the safety of the ocean, but finds his path blocked by a huge tentacled, reptilian beast. He runs away and is called to safety by a group of at least 14 survivors. Among them are the ship's cook Hugo, the engineer Roland, an old and wizened sailor named Werner, a navigator named Deiter, and several others. Meyer reveals that he has surveyed the beach, and it ends in steep cliffs, and with the rising tides, they are set to lose ground and quickly. Roland asks what they are to do, and the captain is initially confused at why they are looking to him for guidance in this situation before remembering that he is still their captain. He orders them to climb the cliffs with their remaining supplies. While he cannot quite see through the thick fog at the top of the cliffs, he is sure there is a mountain on the island, and makes it their destination to light a signal fire and wait for rescue.
He spots a cave on the cliff about halfway up, and decides that if necessary, it will serve as their camp for the night. During the climb, the captain remembers happier days back in Germany, where he They scale the rock into the evening, when he would climb the nearby mountains in his youth. As the sun began to set, they heard the strange cry of an unseen creature. A ranking sailor named Wolfgang does not recognize the sound from any sort of known animal, and the captain bids them make for the cave. The captain makes it into the cave, and bids the men to eat their precious rations sparingly and plans to begin climbing again at dawn. Just for a moment the cave goes completely dark. Something had blocked it so completely that the sunlight could not get in. One of the sailors expresses concern for their safety, and the captain refuses to believe it. Another soldier volunteers to check outside, and they all watch him approach the exit. The mouth goes dark again, and when the light returns, he is gone, and his weapon clatters to the ground. He hears the man cry out for help as a pair of eyes belonging to a gargantuan ape stare back at him through the cave's entrance. The eyes revive the captain's feelings of helplessness under the water during the ship's crash. He hears the soldier's body crunch and snap as he screams. The captain takes an automatic rifle and creeps to the entrance to peek out, and silhouetted against the moon is the giant gorilla he had seen moments ago. Looking into the beast's eyes he understands that he and all of his crew are never making it off the island.

Despite its appearance in this issue set in 1917, the real German submarine U-184 was not constructed until June of 1941. The fictional and real U-184 do however share their fate as missing ships, with the real-world counterpart disappearing off the coast of Canada in November of 1942.[6]
