Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone is an ongoing comic series by IDW Publishing. It is written by Ethan Parker and Griffin Sheridan, with illustrations by Pablo Tunica. Part of a shared universe of Godzilla comics dubbed the Kai-Sei Era, the series debuted on August 6, 2025, between the launches of its companion series Godzilla and Starship Godzilla,[1] and ran for six issues until February 11, 2026. A trade paperback collecting the series will be released on June 23, 2026.[2] A sequel series, titled Godzilla: Revenge of the Deadzone, will launch at some point in 2026.

The series centers on the titular Deadzone, a portion of the Pacific Northwest which was transformed into an irradiated wasteland by the U.S. government's failed attempt to recreate the 1954 experiment that created Godzilla. In this harsh, monster-infested terrain, a half-human, half-kaiju mutant known as the Wanderer fights for survival.[3][4] Along the way, he befriends the monster-attuned children Runt and Glasseater and a gigantic teenager named Sherry Dottsman, while also contending with the cultist Mother A and her Church of Godzilla.

Development

IDW Publishing first revealed plans for a new Godzilla ongoing title and shared universe with the solicitation of Godzilla: The New Heroes in November 2024. The series was formally announced alongside Godzilla and Starship Godzilla on February 19, 2025, as part of IGN's Fan Fest event.[3] The full synopsis was revealed later that day on the official Godzilla website.[5]

On May 2, series editor Jake Williams commented on the inspirations for the story: "Escape the Deadzone is our take on a wandering ronin story. It has the vibes of Lone Wolf and Cub, Sweet Tooth, Mad Max, and Over the Garden Wall. It also surprised me by being really damn funny. I think it's our most early Vertigo-esque title. This book gets very, very weird".[6] According to Williams in a Reddit AMA, the series' six issues had been "pretty much fully written" by early June 2025.[7]

Godzilla is an ongoing that will be released every single month--we currently have a really strong outline for the first 12, and ideas of where we want to go from there!". Reddit.
