"Chapter III: The Chasm"[a] is the third issue of Dynamite Entertainment's Kong: The Great War. It was published on August 30, 2023.[1]

Description

PREHISTORIC NIGHTMARES THAT ARE ALL TOO REAL! Flying thunder lizards! The King of Tyrannosaurs! Man-eating giant insects! The sailors of U-184 are trapped in a world beyond all reason, and the ape-god that rules this island hellscape stands on the horizon, waiting and watching as hot death pursues the doomed mariners across his kingdom. In this pulse-pounding tale written by ALEX COX and illustrated by TOMASSO BIANCHI, the shadows of Skull Island's jungles offer no escape from the carnage - and rescue is only a fleeting dream![1]

Plot

On the dawn of the crew's third day on an uncharted island in the Pacific Ocean, they are besieged by a huge Meat-eating dinosaur. It chases the survivors from the jungle and towards a sea-facing cliff. The ship's captain reflects on the deadly nature of the island and admits hopelessness to its savage chaos. Many sailors die, both to the creature and the cliff before it stops on the edge. Seeing this as an opportunity, the captain rushes the beast's leg, causing it to lose balance, and fall to its death over the side. The engineer Hugo congratulates the captain, and the old sailor Werner counts five men dead from the attack. Other survivors locate a path forward, and the captain assures them that as long as they can fight, they will be able to survive despite knowing that there is no such hope for survival. The men come to a long, narrow rock formation bridging a wide ravine, and Werner volunteers to crawl across and secure a rope on the other side. He ties the line, and ushers the next man across. Halfway along the man is snatched by a colorful Pteranodon and crushed in its jaws. The captain orders the rest of the men across before the rest of the flock arrives. They claim at least two more lives, and send many more careening into the pit below. Werner urges the remaining men to safety, and soon the flock of flying carnivores has dispersed. As the fog in the pit begins to clear, Hugo notices three survivors below. He calls for the men to fire down on the gigantic spiders and bugs surrounding them, but the captain halts him, insisting that gunfire will only draw more of them out. Hugo asks if he can at least spare the men their horrid, painful fate, and the captain hands him his automatic pistol, and gives him three shots, one for each man. Hugo apologizes to them, and lands each of the three rounds as the insects begin to devour the men.

The surviving men find a place to make camp, and the captain resigns himself to "one more night in Hell."
