Plot
An old gambler is crushed by rubble after being rude to his date as Jacen Braid and Godzilla wage war in Las Vegas. Dr. Rumi Chiba climbs up to the surface just as Godzilla launches Braid into the street next to her. She warns him that killing Godzilla will only empower Lament, their true enemy. She extends a hand to him, but he smacks it aside, determined to exact revenge on Godzilla for turning his mother into a monster. Chiba watches in despair as he continues to pummel Godzilla. When Jet Jaguar surfaces, carrying Commander Riviera, Nuki, and Incense in his hand, Chiba orders the robot to clear civilians out of the combat zone. Chiba and Riviera debate whether they should prioritize saving Godzilla or Las Vegas, respectively. Incense wonders whether they'll have to kill Braid if he goes too far, outraging Nuki. Chiba, however, is confident he can be reasoned with.
Scoffing at Chiba, Lament bursts out of the ground before them, declaring that Braid will do whatever his mother asks. Nuki blasts the monster's arm off, but she instantly regenerates it, forming a massive blade instead of a hand. Braid rains down blows against Godzilla, raging at it for seeking him out twice out of every human on the planet. Godzilla counterattacks, headbutting Braid through several buildings, then steps on him. Glowing with power, Braid raises the foot off the ground, then strikes one of its pressure points, knocking Godzilla off its feet. Flying into the air, he targets another pressure in the monster's chest, causing it to vomit blood. Chiba is horrified to see her techniques used for violent ends, but Riviera calls her attention back to the ongoing battle. With Incense and Nuki's weapons both depleted, Lament sends them flying with a backhand, then brings her sword arm down on Riviera as he struggles to hold it back. Chiba intervenes, leaping onto the talking kaiju's head and stabbing her with her kogai blades. Using her psychic powers, she torments Lament with the grief and pain Braid experienced in her absence, as Lament chose not to reunite with Braid and abandoned him in pursuit of her own vendetta against Godzilla.
Braid targets more pressure points across Godzilla's chest and is satisfied to see the fear in the monster's expression—until he realizes Godzilla is dying, its body breaking apart. Lament sprouts wings and flies away, cryptically warning G-Force warning that Godzilla is about to undergo the same catastrophic evolution that birthed both her and the Deadzone. Chiba telepathically links Godzilla and Braid's minds, insisting that they do not have to be enemies, but "brothers of rage". Godzilla agrees to merge its Kai-Sei lifeforce into Braid's body, encasing him in a charred cocoon as the mighty kaiju disintegrates. Jet Jaguar catches the cocoon before it can hit the ground, and Chiba embraces Braid as he emerges.
Though Godzilla is gone, G-Force is soon called back into action against Kumonga. Chiba and Riviera continue to argue about everything. She visits Braid in his room, and he muses that rather than losing his mother again, he may have never really had her. He wonders if Godzilla's demise will indeed lead to something worse; she responds that she is only certainly that they'll face it together. Braid sleeps as Godzilla's spirit rages on inside him.

Trivia
- IDW Publishing released this issue on the same day as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Godzilla #2.
- Cover D recreates the iconic cover of 1993's Superman #75, which featured "the death of Superman" as part of the story arc of the same name. It was created by artist Dan Jurgens, inker Breet Breeding, and colorist Glenn Whitmore, all three of whom contributed to the cover of Superman #75.
- Lament slightly misquotes William Makepeace Thackeray's Vanity Fair; the original text reads, "Mother is the name for God in the lips and hearts of little children", not "all children".
