Bug is a kaiju hatchling who appears in the 2025 IDW Publishing comic Starship Godzilla. While transporting kaiju eggs they had stolen for an enigmatic client, the crew of the S.S. Mechagodzilla had to deal with Bug hatching and wreaking havoc aboard the ship until she was pacified by first mate Ayan.

Name

Bug was not named in the first issue of the series and is later named by Ayan in Starship Godzilla #2.

Design

Bug is a small yellow and pink quadrupedal creature. Her head is almost the same size as her body, and her ginormous eyes, which are white with purple irises, take up most of the sides of her head. She has purple spikes above her snout and ridged pink skin atop her head, appearing almost akin to an exposed brain. She has pink bulbous growths on her back, a thin, two-pronged tail, and small, paw-like feet. Her muzzle is initially yellow in the first issue, though has turned grey by the second.

In her transformed state, she is noticeably larger, her limbs are significantly longer, and she grows extended, sharp claws on her feet. Spikes also appear on her limbs, out of the bulbs on her back, and on the yellow parts of her face.

Personality

Bug initially appeared to be a dangerous, unpredictable beast that attacked on sight shortly after hatching. However, Ayan theorized that the baby kaiju was merely scared, and was soon proven correct when she pacified Bug and allowed her to show her true, docile nature.

Origins

After the crew of the S.S. Mechagodzilla stole an incubator full of rare kaiju eggs for an enigmatic client, Bug unexpectedly hatched and escaped confinement after Ayan accidentally left the incubator door open.

History

Starship Godzilla

"Chapter One: Comet Salt"

Following their successful theft of kaiju eggs at the behest of a mysterious client, first mate Ayan sheepishly informed their captain, Rohan, that one of the eggs had hatched after she accidentally left the incubator door open. The S.S. Mechagodzilla was subsequently placed on lockdown as Rohan, Ayan, and the Simian Lif attempted to locate the kaiju hatchling. As Ayan and Lif argued over what to do with the creature if they found it, the baby kaiju dropped down before them and sprayed a stream of acid from its tail that Rohan barely avoided, only for the acid to pierce the hull of the ship. Fortunately, Ilsa remotely sealed the breach from the flight deck, narrowly preventing the lot from being sucked into space. Lif subsequently cornered the creature and prepared to execute it with his gun, only for Ayan to knock him off his feet, allowing the creature to escape deeper into the vessel.

Despite Ayan's insistence that the creature was merely scared, Rohan and Lif resolved to kill it due to the risk it posed to the ship. After Ilsa informed them that the creature had breached the flight deck, Ayan raced through the bowels of the ship to beat Rohan and Lif to it. As she made it to the ship's cockpit, she calmly greeted the baby kaiju and managed to pacify it. By the time Rohan and Lif arrived, she had already started to feed it snacks before smugly telling them she had been right about its true benevolent nature.

Starship Godzilla #2

After crash-landing on a gambling planet, Ayan reconvened with her grandmother, Gen, and introduced her to the baby kaiju, which she had since taken ownership of and named "Bug"; she also revealed that some of the crew still didn't like the monster, who was partially responsible for the damage that caused the ship to crash, though she emphasized that Bug was gentle. Bug accompanied Ayan as she and Gen attempted to steal parts they needed from other ships, and though Ayan was briefly stalked by King Ghidorah, she managed to locate the parts they needed to allow them to escape the planet.

"Chapter Three: First Date"

On an Xilien-controlled mining planet, Ayan grew suspicious after Rohan departed to deliver kaiju eggs to their client and attempted to follow him, leaving Bug safely behind on the ship.

"Chapter Four: Return of the King, Part One"

On the mushroom moon of Nitrus 5, Bug relaxed with Ayan until the latter received an urgent distress call from Frey and departed to mount a rescue mission. In the aftermath of that successful rescue mission, Bug took a nap on Gen's lap.

Abilities

Transformation

Bug can change her appearance at will, becoming larger, extending her limbs, and growing claws and spikes all over her body when agitated or scared.

Acid spray

Bug can spray a stream of an acidic substance from her tail, which was capable of effortlessly piercing the hull of Mechagodzilla.
