Kai-Sei Era

The Kai-Sei Era is the name for a shared universe of Godzilla comic books created by IDW Publishing that began in 2025. The series is named after "Kai-Sei", a fictional energy source introduced in the series that was responsible for awakening and empowering Godzilla among other beings. It is the second shared universe of ongoing IDW titles following the "IDW Universe" (2011-2015).
The Kai-Sei Era is set in an alternate 2025, featuring a world ravaged by the kaiju and fundamentally altered by Kai-Sei. Each series focuses on a different facet of this universe, from the American division of G-Force and its efforts to defeat the kaiju in Godzilla, to a half-human half-kaiju mutant's efforts to get two children out of a quarantined and irradiated wasteland in Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone, to adventures beyond the Earth aboard the spacefaring S.S. Mechagodzilla in Starship Godzilla. The origins of the setting will be explored in The Horror of Godzilla, recounting Godzilla's first attack in 1954.

Development
IDW Publishing first revealed plans for a new Godzilla ongoing title and shared universe with the solicitation of Godzilla: The New Heroes in November 2024. On February 19, 2025, the Kai-Sei Era was formally announced alongside details and preview images of the first three ongoing titles set within the series: Godzilla, Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone, and Starship Godzilla.[5] The new Godzilla design featured in this continuity, revealed that same day, was a joint collaboration between Godzilla artist Nikola Čižmešija and Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone artist Pablo Tunica.[6]
Series editor Jake Williams has likened the series to Marvel Comics' Ultimate Marvel imprint as a reimagining of various Godzilla mythos and emphasized the importance of playing to the strengths of the medium, expressing a desire to tell stories that can only exist in comics.[7] Williams has offered additional insight into the setting of the series in various interviews ahead of the release of Godzilla #1, detailing an alternate history fundamentally altered by the presence of kaiju and the mysterious Kai-Sei energy in which the United States lost the Cold War and has become isolated from the rest of the world;[7] he has further indicated that characters and elements from these individual series will eventually cross over.[6]
The final issue of Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone was released on February 11, 2026, almost exactly one year after it and the other two initial titles of the Kai-Sei Era were announced, and ended with an announcement of its successor, Godzilla: Revenge of the Deadzone.[1] The following week, on February 16, a fifth Kai-Sei Era title, The Horror of Godzilla, was exclusively announced by Bloody Disgusting.[2]
Roleplaying game
A proposed 2026 tabletop RPG called Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game will be based on the Kai-Sei Era, allowing players to join G-Force to oppose destructive kaiju.
