Charlie (Skull Island episode 4, "Breakfast Fit for a Kong")

The Giant Dodo is an avian superspecies that appears in episode 4 of the 2023 Netflix Original original animated Monsterverse series Skull Island, entitled "Breakfast Fit for a Kong". A Giant Dodo attempted to attack Mike and Charlie, only to be killed by Dog.

Name

Though never named onscreen, the creature was labelled Dodo Bird in Powerhouse Animation's model sheets.[1] It was later identified in Kong: Skull Island - Creature Codex as the Giant Dodo.[2]

Design

The Giant Dodo resembles a dodo but is proportionally similar to a Terror bird, having tall thin legs, sharp talons, and a curved beak. It also possesses flightless wings, orangish asymmetrical-facing eyes, and blue, purple, and green feathers.

Behavior

The Giant Dodo is a swift carnivorous hunter, running at speeds faster than most Skull Island predators. The creature attacks by sprinting straight at its prey and ramming its beak into them. The superspecies usually hunts in large flocks known as "squawks" with entire groups loudly converging on singular Trapdoor Crabs, their main food source, in waves. The birds will not give up until either their target escapes or one side is killed. Many of the creatures die in the process. with there often being more dead Giant Dodo meat for the crab than vice versa. However, Giant Dodos can sometimes be found hunting other prey by themselves. Similarly to their extinct counterparts, the superspecies is unable to register fear, explaining their reckless attack method. Despite this deadly strategy, there are many Giant Dodos across Skull Island because they mature very quickly.[2]

Skull Island

"Breakfast Fit for a Kong"

After Annie and Dog abruptly left to find breakfast, a Giant Dodo approached Charlie and Mike and stared them down. Mike tried to intimidate it, but the creature was unfazed and charged at full speed. They prepared to fight it hand-to-hand, with Mike significantly more enthusiastic than Charlie, only for Dog to crash down on top of it. Taking its neck in his mouth, he slammed it into the ground, quickly killing it. As Annie declared the bird breakfast, Charlie realized that she had used them as bait. The group roasted the Giant Dodo over a fire shortly thereafter.

Abilities

Physical abilities

The Giant Dodos primarily attack by running at their opponent and slamming their beak into them. The Giant Dodos are also incredibly fast, outpacing many of Skull Island's other creatures. While they possess sharp talons, they do not use them often, nor are they commonly known to bite onto victims with their beaks.[2]

Rapid maturity

Giant Dodos mature quickly, allowing them to propagate across Skull Island.[2]
