When those terrifying gods came, and they transformed this place... they did so with purpose. They rained fire and death and destruction... down on a godless people to remind us of who we really are. We are ants. We were made to kneel. Designed to worship at the feet of unimaginable power. We are not lost, my children. We are the subjects of their kingdom. The kingdom of Godzilla.

Mother A (Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone #2)

The Church of Godzilla is a kaiju-worshiping cult that appears in IDW Publishing's ongoing 2025 comic series Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone.

History

Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone

The Church of Godzilla was a cult formed by denizens of Deadzone, a desolate wasteland in the United States. They worshipped the kaiju that inhabited the globe, especially Godzilla, and believed their destruction had purpose. Acolytes of the Church of Godzilla sought to spread their gospel to lost and lonely citizens across the Deadzone and beyond.

In the Deadzone, the half-man, half-kaiju mutant known as the Wanderer discovered a pair of strange children with the power to control kaiju. As he sought answers from them, the trio were ambushed by unseen adversaries, who knocked the Wanderer unconscious with gas and abducted him. When he awoke, he found himself in the presence of Mother A, leader of the Church of Godzilla, and sensed the church's stockpile of Kai-Sei energy. After leaving him, Mother A proceeded to deliver a sermon to the churchgoers, flanked by the despondent children from earlier. Mother A offered newcomers a chance to find purpose in the desolate wasteland of the Deadzone, though before she could conclude her speech, the Wanderer broke free of his restraints and burst through the floor of the church in a larger, more monstrous form. As the churchgoers scrambled for their lives, Mother A ordered her acolytes to return the children to their cells, though the Wanderer heard their pleas and violently attacked the acolytes to free them. The Wanderer then burst through the walls of the church with the children in tow, leaving the stunned Mother A and her followers behind.

Mother A ordered a search party to be dispatched in pursuit of the escapees. After fleeing some distance into the Deadzone, the Wanderer learned more about the children, Glasseater and Runt. The kids explained that they were the "chosen children of the Church of Godzilla" who were destined to reunite with Godzilla and bring about the end of humanity, though they later revealed that they did not believe in this alleged purpose for themselves; instead, they merely desired to live freely in peace, revealing that they had been held in the Church against their wills and had made numerous failed escape attempts in the past. The Wanderer assured them that he would help the kids escape from the Deadzone.

Sometime later, two members of the Church tracked the group down and followed them to a town where they were being held captive and forced to combat other captive kaiju to entertain the townspeople. During the fight, the Church's helicopters descended upon the arena as Mother A rode atop a pterosaur-like mount above.
