Dr. Rumi Chiba is a major supporting character in IDW Publishing's 2025 ongoing comic series Godzilla. A telepath and former member of G-Force Japan, Chiba was recently transferred G-Force USA. Unlike her teammates, Chiba utilizes understanding and strategy in efforts to repel kaiju from populated areas rather than brute force.
Personality
Rumi is generally framed as a compassionate and responsible person in stark contrast to her more hot-headed team members. While the rest of her G-Force team is determined to bring down kaiju using brute force and weaponry, Rumi has a more sympathetic view of the monsters, likening them to forces of nature and often tries to end rampages through telepathic persuasion and understanding. Despite concerns over his temperament and power, she formed a particularly close bond with Jacen Braid, sympathizing with the boy over his past losses and refusing to give up on him, always holding onto hope that he could conquer his anger and learn that endless violence against the kaiju was not the answer.

Godzilla #1
Captain Riviera shared footage of Godzilla's recent attack on Manhattan with his G-Force USA field team, consisting of recent transfer Dr. Rumi Chiba, Nuki, Incense, and the android Jet Jaguar. The footage depicted a kid named Jacen Braid surviving a direct blast of Godzilla's atomic breath and even delivering a supercharged punch to Godzilla's foot, much to the team's shock. Riviera proceeded to introduce the young man to the team as their latest recruit, revealing him to be a G-Mutant capable of harnessing Kai-Sei energy, though Chiba expressed concerns after Braid declared his intent to kill Godzilla. Later, the team engaged in a combat training session with their new recruit, during which Braid identified the strengths and weaknesses of his team. During the match, Braid accidentally unleashed a burst of Kai-Sei energy on Incense in anger, though the team was then interrupted by reports that Anguirus had appeared off the coast of Florida. As the team rushed off to confront the monster, Chiba spoke with Braid, sharing her beliefs from Japan that endless war with kaiju was not the answer and that great power can be generative, though Braid was dismissive and only wanted to kill kaiju much like the rest of his team.
Upon arrival, Riviera reiterated his philosophy that tiny targets such as themselves were harder for massive kaiju to focus on, hence their preference for combating kaiju without the use of tanks or jets. As the team engaged Anguirus, Riviera ordered Dr. Chiba to stay back, expressing concerns over her methods of not wanting to kill the kaiju they fight. Chiba instead used her telepathic powers in an attempt to communicate with Anguirus, feeling the monster's overwhelming rage before falling unconscious just as the rest of the team successfully repelled the monster from the coast after a short bout. Afterwards, Chiba shared her concerns that something was amiss with Anguirus, only for Riviera to dismiss her and celebrate their victory with drinks on the beach, reminding Chiba that her "sixth sense" had only gotten her in trouble back when she worked with G-Force Japan. Later, Chiba decided to investigate alone and took a boat on Tampa Bay to the spot where Anguirus had deviated from his normal route, only to discover that Braid had followed her. While initially angry, she became sympathetic after Braid expressed his unease at people leaving him, as it reminded him of the day his mother left and never came back. As they talked, Braid was abruptly pulled underwater by giant leeches.
Godzilla #2
Using her kogai blade, Chiba fought off the leeches swarming Braid underwater, narrowly saving his life. Later, back at headquarters, Riviera reprimanded Chiba for running off with their new recruit, but was willing to write off her actions as she brought the corpse of one of the leeches back with them for study. The team determined that the leeches fed on Kai-Sei energy and had previously drained Anguirus of its energy, explaining how they were able to fight the monster back with such ease. As Riviera inspected the leech, two more burst forth from its stomach as it was revealed to reproduce asexually, prompting Chiba to order Nuki and Incense to destroy it. However, Riviera intervened, believing the team could use the leeches to weaken Godzilla. The team set sail on a cargo ship off the coast of Bermuda, hoping to lure Godzilla into a trap. En route, Chiba elaborated on Japan's methods of dealing with kaiju with Braid, treating them akin to forces of nature, though Braid confided his past losses at Godzilla's hands and could not help but believe that Godzilla's attacks were personal. Feeling sympathy for the boy, Chiba promised him they would stick together in a moment Nuki mistook for a romantic gesture. The ship then came under attack by pirates led by the infamous Captain Carroñero. As Chiba and Riviera arrived, the latter attempted to bargain with Carroñero for the release of the team, though Carroñero believed the team was hiding something more valuable and subdued both of them. The pirates unwittingly unleashed the leeches—including a massive, multiheaded one as a result of them self-propagating—upon the vessel, with Carroñero dubbing the creatures Yacumama.
Godzilla #3
The team worked together to dispatch the Yacumama, with Chiba using her blade to eliminate several of them. After killing all of the leeches, the team also subdued the pirates before forcibly docking at Bermuda, ignoring the demands of the European Kaiju Defense Force. There, Riviera was contacted by G-Force's science division and informed that the Yacumama were synthetic lifeforms created by an unknown intelligence at a test site in Nevada before also learning that Godzilla appeared in Atlanta, having used Anguirus's tunnels to travel underground. While Chiba was concerned that they were helping an unknown party enact their plan of using the leeches against Godzilla, Riviera was determined to acquire more. Chiba expressed her desire to protect other cities from Godzilla's wrath, resulting in Riviera granting her permission to train Braid with her nonlethal methods against Godzilla while he departed with Nuki and Incense. At Chiba's orders, Jet Jaguar grew to Godzilla's size and took her and Braid in his hands. As they traveled underwater, Chiba shared more details about her previous G-Force Japan team and their methods for dealing with kaiju. While the rest of her team would bombard attacking kaiju like Godzilla with light, sound, and pheromone-based attacks, she would use her kogai blade to strike pressure points, allowing them to direct kaiju away from populated areas. She explained that, because kaiju are so large, their bodies contain many nerve clusters to compensate for the distances their brain impulses had to travel, and offered to teach Braid her methods and show him where he had to strike.
Godzilla #4
While teaching Braid her methods, Chiba offered words of encouragement after the young man expressed doubt over his self-control, with Chiba believing he was capable of not giving into his rage and desire for retribution the way Godzilla had always given into its own anger. After arriving in Kansas City, the team found that Godzilla had surfaced, prompting Jet Jaguar to engage the monster. However, Chiba knew the robot was not enough to stop Godzilla, at which point Braid entered the fray. Through her telepathy, Chiba informed Braid that Godzilla recognized him. Though he initially struggled to contain his feelings, Braid successfully enacted Chiba's plan of attacking specific pressure points on Godzilla and sent the monster back into Anguirus's tunnels, where Chiba and Braid resumed their pursuit with Jet Jaguar. Soon after, the trio breached an underground facility, which they found to be the very same location that Riviera, Nuki, and Incense had been investigating. However, Riviera merely ordered them to stand aside, having acquired more Yacumama from their creator, a talking kaiju known as Lament.
Godzilla #5
Chiba and Riviera traded barbs while Godzilla engaged the giant Yacumama, with Chiba questioning how far Riviera was willing to go to stop Godzilla given Yacumama's role in Godzilla's recent attacks on American cities. Chiba subsequently experienced an intense psychic episode in which she learned of Lament's origins in a catastrophic experiment where scientists attempted and failed to contain and exploit the Earth's natural Kai-Sei energies, giving rise to Lament, who she described as the "Anti-Kai Sei". She pleaded with Braid not to give into his anger towards Godzilla, and despite Lament and Riviera's efforts to dissuade him, Braid sided with Chiba and attacked Lament. Chiba ordered Jet Jaguar to assist Godzilla against Riviera's orders, prompting Nuki and Incense to join the mutiny as well, allowing Godzilla retreat from Yacumama, much to their commander's fury. However, after Yacumama grabbed Nuki and bounded after Godzilla down a tunnel, Riviera joined his team's rescue party led by Chiba. While Godzilla and Braid formed a temporary alliance to break Yacumama apart, the team located and rescued Nuki. Working together, Godzilla and G-Force USA destroyed all of the Yacumama, only to be confronted by Lament, whose taunts over knowing Braid's past piqued Riviera's interest. Lament went on to detail her own origins as the formerly-human head of the disastrous Kai-Sei experiment Chiba spoke of until Godzilla detected this and destroyed the facility in an act Lament framed as Godzilla's unwillingness to share its Kai-Sei power with humanity. Lament proceeded to identify herself as Braid's mother, horribly deformed and changed by the accident Godzilla caused, enraging Braid into violently attacking Godzilla despite Chiba's efforts to calm him as he took their fight to the surface.
Godzilla #6
While Braid battled Godzilla, Chiba climbed out of the hole he created to get to the surface in Las Vegas, where she briefly reconvened with Braid in the midst of his battle and unsuccessfully attempted to dissuade him from continuing his fight. Jet Jaguar then brought the rest of the team to the surface. Though Chiba wished to help Godzilla, Riviera decreed their priority was saving the city and questioned Chiba over whether or not they would have to stop Braid by force, though Chiba believed that Braid could be reasoned with. Before they could act, Lament burst from the ground and confronted the team, believing Braid would carry out her wishes to kill Godzilla. While the rest of her team fought Lament, Chiba was horrified to witness Braid using her own techniques to try to kill Godzilla before returning her attention to Lament, saving Riviera's life by leaping onto the talking kaiju's head and using her psychic powers to torment Lament with the grief and pain Braid experienced in her absence, as Lament chose not to reunite with Braid and abandoned him in pursuit of her own vendetta against Godzilla. Lament fled the scene just as Godzilla's body began to deteriorate in its battle against Braid, at which point Chiba used her abilities to link Godzilla and Braid's minds as Godzilla's Kai-Sei lifeforce merged into Braid's body.
After recovering Braid, Chiba and the rest of the team continued their work of trying to defend the country from kaiju, though she and Riviera continued to butt heads, with Chiba bemoaning that Riviera remained largely unchanged by recent events. Chiba also comforted the despondent Braid in the aftermath of his battle with Godzilla, assuring him that they would stick together.
Abilities
Telepathy
Rumi possesses telepathic abilities that allow her to understand the thoughts of kaiju, attempting to end kaiju conflicts through a more diplomatic approach. She used this ability in an attempt to persuade an enraged Anguirus to cease his rampage, though the kaiju was forcibly sent into retreat by her fellow G-Force members before her approach could be realized.
Weapons
Rumi possesses a kogai blade that she uses in combat against kaiju, sharp enough to cut straight through a Yacumama far larger than herself in just a single swing.
