— A mercenary upon seeing a Grass Hedgehog (Skull Island episode 3, "What's Up, Croc?")

The Grass Hedgehog is a mammalian superspecies that first appeared in episode 3 of the 2023 Netflix Original original animated Monsterverse series Skull Island, entitled "What's Up, Croc?"

Name

While never named onscreen, the animal is referred to as "Grass Hedgehog" in Powerhouse Animation's model sheet[2] and the Kong: Skull Island - Creature Codex.[1]

Design

Despite their name, Grass Hedgehogs bear a closer resemblance to cats and dogs than to hedgehogs. They have shaggy brown fur, green eyes, and black noses. Thick blades of a grass-like plant sprout from their backs, shifting from a deep red at the bases to bright orange at the tips. These can grow to be up to triple the creature's height. The fur on their snouts resemble a mustache, growing long enough to touch the ground. Grass Hedgehogs are quadrupedal, with four three-toed paws. They have short tails.

Behavior

Grass Hedgehogs are docile, timid creatures that spend most of their time buried under loose soil. When at rest, the grass blades on their backs remain visible above ground and allow photosynthesis. Their sensitive whiskers alert them of anything moving around nearby. The Grass Hedgehogs hunt by waiting for small rodents and insects to come close enough to be snatched. If necessary, they will also wander around their territory to scavenge. Communities of these hedgehogs comprising of hundreds of members resemble a grassy field, providing camouflage to each other. Flashgulls and Grass Hedgehogs have a symbiotic relationship, with Flashgulls having been observed making nests and laying eggs in Grass Hedgehog fields. The mammalian superspecies protect these nests by taking care of scavengers that attempt to take the eggs. In return, the Flashgulls occasionally drop food for the Hedgehogs. When attacked, a Grass Hedgehog will either try to escape or defend itself.[1]

History

Monsterverse

Skull Island

"What's Up, Croc?"

Cap, Irene, and a few of her mercenaries were traveling through long orange grass when they heard something rustling nearby. They readied their weapons, only to be surprised when a harmless-looking Grass Hedgehog stepped into a clearing before them. The creature regarded them, made a cat-like meow, and continued on its way.

"You're Not a King, You're Just a Stupid Animal"

The Hawk Monster caught a Grass Hedgehog and deposited it in the temple where Kong resided. Though the hedgehog tried to flee, Kong quickly grabbed it and ate it.

Abilities

Camouflage

Grass Hedgehogs can camouflage in certain areas of Skull Island thanks to the grass on their backs.

Burrowing

Grass Hedgehogs can burrow underground to rest while allowing their glass blades to remain visible on the surface.
