Cave bear
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The cave bear[2] is an extinct species of bear that lived during the Pleistocene epoch in northern Eurasia and went extinct near the end of the Last Ice Age. A cave bear appears in the 1933 King Kong film Son of Kong, where it lives on Skull Island along with many other animals that have survived from prehistoric times.
Name
The cave bear got its name because its remains are often found in caves, where it apparently spent more time than modern bears.
Development
The stop-motion puppet for the cave bear was manufactured by Marcel Delgado.[1]
Appearance
This bear species is closely related to the modern brown bear, but reached a larger size. Like all bears, it had sharp teeth and long claws. A distinctive feature of the cave bear is its steep forehead, which gives it a very stepped profile. This feature is missing from Son of Kong, where the cave bear's profile and snout bears more resemblance to a black bear. In this film, the animal has dark fur and small ears, and is larger than the real cave bear.
History
- Son of Kong (1933)
Son of Kong
After spotting Carl Denham and Hilda Petersen in its Skull Island domain, a cave bear rushed after them through the jungle. In an attempt to stop the beast, Denham shot it with a gun. Slightly taken aback by the shot, the bear paused briefly, only to resume its pursuit the next moment. Having reached the steps of the temple, Denham and Petersen hid behind the rocks, but the bear detected them by smell and began to climb towards them. Petersen screamed in despair, and Kiko, son of the late Kong, heard her. Arriving at the temple, he engaged the bear in battle. Dodging his claws and teeth, Kiko tired it out with the fight and, with a final couple of blows from a log, drove the beast away.
Abilities
Physical abilities
The cave bear is of strong build. Thanks to its muscles and strong bones, it can withstand shots from a gun, blows from Kiko's fists, and even some blows from a log. Despite its apparent massiveness, the cave bear is capable of running fast enough to catch up with a human. Like real bears, the cave bear is quadrupedal, but can also move on its two hind legs.
Smelling
The cave bear has a well-developed sense of smell, which allows it to locate its prey.
Weaknesses
The cave bear was not very smart or agile; Kiko successfully repelled its attacks, crawled out from under its body, and ultimately defeated it using an external object.
