Jovian Flytrap

The Jovian Flytrap is a plant superspecies that appears in episode 4 of the 2023 Netflix Original original animated Monsterverse series Skull Island, entitled "Breakfast Fit for a Kong". A Jovian Flytrap attempted to eat Irene in a field of giant flowers on Skull Island, but Sam sliced through its stem.
Name
Though never named onscreen, the creature was labelled Venus Fly Trap Creature in Powerhouse Animation's model sheets.[1] It was later identified in Kong: Skull Island - Creature Codex as the Jovian Flytrap.[2] The word Jovian in its name is in reference to the planet Jupiter, likely a play on the Venus flytrap.
Design
Jovian Flytraps are tall plants with thick green stems and golden flowers that double as camouflage for their mouths. The petals of the flower have purple eye-shaped patterns. The four-pronged purple maw is tipped with a yellow and purple horn and has a row of reddish teeth (one row in the show but two in Kong: Skull Island - Creature Codex) and several tendrils inside it. Multiple small leaves grow from the base of the plant. The creature bleeds a red liquid.
Behavior
Jovian Flytraps are carnivorous plants that bite onto their prey and then leave them in their mouths until they die of suffocation. Tendrils inside their mouths and thick saliva help anchor the victims in place. The prey is digested over a long period of time. The superspecies detects where any targets are using their roots and the small sensitive leaves around their bases. These roots detect any motion up to 10 feet away from the plant and the leaves are used like whiskers to pinpoint the exact location of the movement. The superspecies can be found in massive groups in valleys on Skull Island. The flower of the Jovian Flytrap acts as both a reproductive organ and as camouflage. Attracted by a sugary substance produced by the plant, pollinators native to Skull Island spread the pollen of the Jovian Flytraps between male and female individuals.[2] It is ambiguous whether all of the yellow flowers are carnivorous or if Jovian Flytraps mimic the appearance of a harmless species.[3]

Skull Island
"Breakfast Fit for a Kong"
Cap, Irene, and Sam came upon a field of massive yellow flowers, one of which revealed itself to be a Jovian Flytrap and snatched Irene up with its enormous jaws when her back was turned to it. Sam cut through the flower's stem with a machete, and he and Cap pulled Irene out of its mouth with great effort, breaking several tendrils holding her in place in the process. She and Sam laughed at the irony of a botanist almost being eaten by a flower, then were surprised to see Cap soothing the dying creature.
Abilities
Camouflage
Jovian Flytraps can disguise themselves as regular tall plants by hiding their mouths inside their flowers and staying motionless.
Bite
Jovian Flytraps can bite onto their targets with great strength. A thick saliva and tendrils within the mouth help keep the victim in place as they suffocate to death.
Prey Detection
The roots and small leaves around the base of the Jovian Flytrap are very sensitive to movement. The roots detect if there is any motion and then the leaves pinpoint where the movement came from.
Weaknesses
The Jovian Flytrap's stem can be cut through using something sharp like a machete and its tendrils can be torn off by pulling on them.
