Robogodzilla (ロボゴジラ,   Robogojira) is a mechanical kaiju that first appeared in episode 13 of the 2021 anime Godzilla series Godzilla Singular Point.

Name

Differentiating itself from previous Mechagodzilla interpretations, this robot duplicate of Godzilla is called Robogodzilla. Its name was discovered by Japanese fans who decoded the special characters on the computer screens featured alongside it.[2][3] Its name was later displayed on the Mechagodzilla exhibit at the Godzilla Museum,[1] and in the 2022 book Battle of Mechagodzilla.[4]

Design

Robogodzilla's design clearly echoes those of the Showa Mechagodzilla, although it possesses missile launchers on its hands and feet rather than having missiles comprise its fingers and toes. It appears possess a weapon in its mouth in imitation of Godzilla's atomic breath. The teeth and mandible of the original Godzilla skeleton are visible in the robot's maw, while the claws and hands of the skeleton are visible underneath the arms' armored plating. Robogodzilla appeared to still be under construction during its brief appearance, possessing various gaps in its neck and between its torso that displayed red inner frames and its inner machinery.

Origins

SHIVA.consortium founder Michiyuki Ashihara had been working in secret to convert the bones of a deceased Godzilla into Robogodzilla since at least the 1970s. Robogodzilla was built in the event that Godzilla or any other kaiju would return in the future.[4]

Trivia

  • Robogodzilla is the second incarnation of Mechagodzilla to be built around the skeleton of a Godzilla, after Kiryu, and the third Mechagodzilla incarnation to incorporate the remains of another monster, after Kiryu and the Monsterverse Mechagodzilla. Kiryu also appears in Godzilla Singular Point's end credits sequence, turning his head 180 degrees like the Showa Mechagodzilla, whose design Robogodzilla strongly resembles.
  • Robogodzilla currently has the shortest screen time of any on-screen incarnation of Mechagodzilla, appearing in only a single scene.
  • The computer screens accompanying Robogodzilla state that parts of it were produced by "Black Hole, Inc." and "Third Planet, Inc." in both 1975 and 2002. This references both the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens, who built the Showa Mechagodzilla, and the release years of the films Terror of Mechagodzilla and Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla.
  • The red inner frames within Robogodzilla's torso bear a resemblance to the inner frames in anatomy charts of the Showa Mechagodzilla.
  • Bernie Hayes previously called Mechagodzilla "Robo-Godzilla" in Godzilla vs. Kong, released just months before "Together" aired.
