The Flashgull is a gull superspecies that briefly appeared in episode 2 of the 2023 Netflix Original animated Monsterverse series Skull Island, entitled "The Last Blank Space on the Map." Two of the birds flew over a beach.

Name

While never named onscreen, the animal is referred to as "Flashgull" in the Kong: Skull Island - Creature Codex. The name comes from the creature's ability to blind enemies with flashes of light.[1]

Design

Flashgulls resemble common gulls but their feathers are vibrant and brightly colored. The superspecies has three differently colored variants, those being green, pink, and orange.

Behavior

Flashgulls are omnivorous and behave similarly to regular gulls. The superspecies live near the shores of Skull Island where they hunt fish and small crustaceans. They also hunt Ivy Dragons in freshwater rivers.[2] Flocks of Flashgulls can sometimes reach up to over a hundred individuals. The feathers on a Flashgull are likely used for attracting mates. It is believed that the creatures can see more parts of the light spectrum than humans. Infrared light reveals complex patterns on their feathers, while shining ultraviolet light changes the color. Flashgulls may use this to identify other individuals. The feathers on the belly and beneath the wings are reflective and collect sunlight. When threatened or hunting, a Flashgull can shake these feathers, causing a chemical reaction that shoots out a quick burst of light, blinding opponents. This light can also be used as a signal for other Flashgulls to indicate that food or danger is close by. The creatures share a symbiotic relationship with Grass Hedgehogs, who defend Flashgull nests within their territory. The Flashgulls return the favor by bringing food to the hedgehogs.[1]

The feathers under the wings and belly of a Flashgull are reflective and gather sunlight. When threatened, Flashgulls can shake their wings, causing a chemical reaction that flashes out a burst of light which can temporarily blind opponents.[1]

Enhanced light vision

Flashgulls are capable of viewing infrared light and ultraviolet light, using this to see complex patterns on the feathers of other individuals.[1]
