Slither Flower
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Slither Flower is a caecilian superspecies that was first introduced in the 2025 Monsterverse bestiary book Kong: Skull Island - Creature Codex.
Name
The Slither Flowers' cryptozoological classification, Olisthima louloudi, comes from the Greek words olisthos, which means "sliding" or "slippery", and louloudi, meaning "flower" or "bloom".[1]
Development
The Slither Flower was one of two winners for the "Kongtest" creature contest where contestants submitted ideas for new florafauna creatures that would appear in Kong: Skull Island - Isle of the Damned. As a result, a plushie of the Slither Flower was made and sent to the person who submitted it, Erik Evert.[2]
Design
Slither Flowers are a species of green-yellow caecilian resembling serpents with magenta-colored petal-like flaps surrounding their heads. Many veins connect from these flaps to the neck. A ring of leaves sit behind the flaps.[1] The original Slither Flower artwork for the Kongtest depicts the creature with four short roots on the tip of its tail.[2]
Behavior
Slither Flowers are a sanguivorous, amphibious, florafaunal superspecies that reside in the wetlands of Skull Island. The creatures can sense the environment around them with the use of their petal-like flaps. These flaps can be opened outward by engorging them with blood. Slither Flowers move like serpents both underwater and on the surface, usually within leaf litter to avoid being spotted by predators. The creatures hunt in areas covered in debris, never hunting in the same place twice within a fortnight. When in position, they redirect all blood flow to the upper half of their body, holding themselves upright and flaring their flaps. The Slither Flower then spits out a toxic mist from their mouth at their victims, blinding, burning, and paralyzing them. The creature then bites onto their prey and sucks out their blood until they are full. The superspecies can survive up to a week without hunting. If something attacks a Slither Flower, the creature will bite back and spray its mist while retreating to a spot where they won't be reached.[1]
History
Monsterverse
Kong: Skull Island - Isle of the Damned
Within a bamboo forest on Skull Island, the heroes encountered five Slither Flowers roughly four to six feet in length. The creatures were either killed or succeeded in satiating themselves with blood.
Abilities
Acidic mist
Slither Flowers can spit out a caustic mist from their mouth that can blind prey. This venom can burn the victim's flesh and contains a neurotoxin that will paralyze the victim after ten seconds. However, it can be washed off with water within these first ten seconds.[1]
Camouflage
As Slither Flowers have petals and leaves around their head, they can blend into their environment and use their chromatophores to change the color of their blood-filled flaps.[1]
Physical abilities
Slither Flowers can bite onto their prey and suck blood out of them.[1]
Heightened senses
Using their petal-like flaps, Slither Flowers can sense the environment around them by detecting air pressure and thermal radiation. This means that the creatures can still see their environment even if they are blinded by opponents.[1]
Amphibiousness
Slither Flowers are amphibious, being able to move underwater and on the ground.[1]
