Skull Island seems like the last place on Earth that a person would find a horse. So, when some of the earliest explorers heard the unmistakable thunder of hooves in the night, they were surprised, to say the least.

The Roakur is a reptilian horse-like superspecies that was introduced in the 2025 bestiary book Kong: Skull Island - Creature Codex.
Name
The superspecies' name Roakur comes from the sound of their laughter. Their cryptozoological classification, Equusaqua timida, comes from the Latin words equus, meaning "horse," aqua, which refers to water, and timida, which means "timid".[1]
Design
The Roakur resembles a scarred, green-eyed, brownish horse covered in leaves, sticks, and other plants, though it is actually reptilian and more like a dinosaur. It has a thick, adhesive-covered, irregular hide like willow bark. It also possesses a lizard-like tail, gills, and cleft hooves that extend into talon-like claws. Small gills sit under the superspecies' chin and its mouth contains several rows of sharp teeth.[1]
Behavior
The Roakur is a relatively rare carnivorous florafauna that resides in the swamps of Skull Island with most of the information about it coming from eyewitness accounts. The creatures have also been seen in treelines near the shore. They are usually found alone, but can sometimes be spotted in groups of two or three. The superspecies hunts by approaching their prey slowly, as if though they were shy, primarily sticking to areas with less sunlight to conceal their appearance. The Roakur releases a pleasant smell that can make their victims feel hungry. If the prey comes closer, the Roakur joyfully rushes over and even nuzzles against them. Once their victim touches them and gets stuck due to the strong adhesive on their hide, the superspecies suddenly drags them into the closest body of water in an attempt to drown them. Roakurs have been seen ambushing prey too, lunging out of the water at them. When hostile, the creature makes rapid croaking noises comparable to laughter.[1]
Abilities
Pleasant odor
A Roakur's body releases a fragrant smell similar to fresh fruits and vegetables that can make their victims feel hungry.[1]
Adhesive hide
The Roakur's hide oozes a powerful adhesive that sticks their victims to them. This lets the Roakur drag their prey underwater in order to drown them. [1]
Physical abilities
Roakurs are powerful enough to be able to drag their prey into water and drown them. They also have sharp hooves and many teeth.[1]
Amphibiousness
Roakurs have gills and are primarily being found near water. This aids the creatures in drowning their prey or ambushing them.[1]
Trivia
- The Roakur was likely inspired by the kelpie, a mythical shapeshifting spirit from Scottish folklore. Kelpies are said to be able to take the form of a horse to trick unwary people into trying to ride them, at which point they are impossible to dismount, dragging the would-be rider underwater and devouring them.
