Vine Snake
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Vine Snake is a serpentine superspecies that appears in episode 4 of the 2023 Netflix Original animated Monsterverse series Skull Island, entitled "Breakfast Fit for a Kong". A Vine Snake watched Charlie, Mike, Annie, and Dog as they walked through the forest, and eight of the serpents attacked a group of Irene's mercenaries later on.
Name
While never named onscreen, the animal is referred to as Vine Snake in the Kong: Skull Island - Creature Codex, reflecting its appearance and florafaunal nature. Wikizilla previously used "vine snake" as a generic descriptor for this superspecies prior to the capitalized version becoming its official moniker.
Design
Vine Snakes are dark green serpents with yellowish eyes, resembling a common species of parasitic vine found on tall trees on Skull Island. The creatures' skins have small, smooth, fleshy, leaf-like flaps that can look brownish in dryer periods. Two-headed variants of the Vine Snake exist due to the superspecies' method of reproduction.[1]
Behavior
Vine Snakes are carnivorous florafauna that reside within Skull Island forests and jungles. They hang motionless from trees most of the time, allowing them to quickly ambush nearby prey, primarily small birds and insects. The creature's bite contains a deadly neurotoxin that is often fatal for humans. Their articulated jaw lets them swallow their victims whole. If their current spot doesn't garner enough prey, the Vine Snake may relocate. The superspecies also takes in nutrients through the use of photosynthesis, which is why it is usually found in sunnier locations. Vine Snakes reproduce asexually through a month-long budding process where a second head forms at the neck. A second body then grows and eventually splits off from the parent.[1]

Abilities
Camouflage
Vine Snakes can be easily mistaken for vines or another species of plants because of their appearance, making it easier for the creatures to hide in plain sight.[1]
Neurotoxin
A Vine Snake's bite delivers a neurotoxin strong enough to potentially kill a person.[1]
Physical abilities
A Vine Snake's articulated jaw allows them to swallow their prey whole.[1]
Reproduction
Vine Snakes reproduce by having a second individual grow out of their neck. This process can last a month, which is why two-headed Vine Snakes can often be sighted.[1]
Trivia
- In Kong: Skull Island - The Official Movie Novelization, a giant snake mistaken for a vine attacks James Conrad, though it is unknown if the Vine Snake is meant to be the same creature.
