Be Strong, Gamera

When the Zigrans and Virians unite for conquest of the Earth, Gamera joins forces with several other monsters to repel them, including the Whale God God Gein (鯨神 ゴッドゲイン,   Geishin Goddo Gein). The giant whale is physically powerful and proves immune to W's Cell Activity Suspension Beam due to its sheer size; it later battles a Zigran in New York City.

Trivia

  • The Whale God, along with the novel and film featuring it, is inspired by the American novel Moby-Dick.[citation needed]
  • A possible reference to the Whale God was planned for the 1999 film Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris, with Gamera briefly interacting with a pair of North Pacific right whales near the ruins of Atlantis.[1]
  • The name Kujira Gami has also been used by the giant whale-like yokai Dai-Kaijū, being redeveloped from Raban, from the manga series GeGeGe no Kitarō and its various adaptations.[2] Shigeru Mizuki made the actual Kujira Gami to appear in his non-Kitarō manga Kaidan Kaeri Bune; both Dai-Kaijū and Kaidan Kaeri Bune were published in 1964, two years after the release of Daiei's The Whale God.[3]
    • The name Kujira Gami has also been used for other productions including ones depicting right whale-based characters.[4][5][6]
