— Kalin's order in the original version of Ilya Muromets

Zmey Gorynych (Змей Горыныч) is a giant three-headed dragon from Russian folklore that is featured in the 1956 Mosfilm film Ilya Muromets. The monster's portrayal in the film was one of many influences on the creation of King Ghidorah.[1]

Name

Zmey Gorynych is also sometimes referred to as Zemy, Zmei, Zmei Gorynych, and Zmei Gorynich and was dubbed Zuma the Fire Dragon in the American version of Ilya Muromets.

Development

In Ilya Muromets, Zmey Gorynych was portrayed by a full-scale model.[2] To give the creature its fire breath, Mosfilm's head pyrotechnician, Vladimir Sukhoretsky, installed flamethrowers in each of its three heads.[3]

History

Ilya Muromets

During the attack on Kyiv, Tsar Kalin ordered his warriors to form a mound from their bodies, from the top of which he wanted to see where the ambush was hiding. Seeing this mound, Razumey fired at it from a giant ballista. Kalin fell from his horse and, furious, ordered Nevryui to release Zmey Gorynych to burn Kyiv down. The three-headed dragon flew out of the mountain gorge and was seen by Little Falcon and the freed Vasilisa. Muromets' son immediately went to Kyiv to help his father.

Gorynych flew towards Kyiv and began to spew fire from his heads. Without wasting time, Razumey and his men took aim and fired a ballista at the dragon. With the left wing damaged, the monster landed near the city walls and began to spew fire at the army. Despite the heat and the dragon's enormous size, the army was able to overcome him with numbers. One warrior managed to gallop as close as possible and cut off his right head. Alyosha Popovich cooled himself with water, distracted monster's attention by throwing a burning branch towards his front paw and cut off his left head. At this point, Little Falcon, wearing Kyiv armor, joined the fight and thrust his spear into the dragon's central neck. Motivated by this brave act, Ilya Muromets, also doused with water, ran up close and cut off the last head.
