Personality

Sumiko is a very motherly person, unhesitatingly helping Koichi Shikishima and Noriko Oishi raise the infant orphan, Akiko. While she was initially harsh toward Koichi for not performing his duty as a kamikaze pilot, she fed Akiko rice gruel before giving Noriko and Koichi her "prized" bag of white rice after learning Noriko was not Akiko's mother. As she did so, she acknowledged the vitality of nutrition, proclaiming "adults can survive on anything" in addition to warning them about the chances of Akiko dying of malnutrition.

History

Reiwa era

Godzilla Minus One

In December 1945, Sumiko Ota's neighbor, ensign and kamikaze pilot Koichi Shikishima, returned home alive. She was initially shocked, but this quickly turned to scorn as she berated him for not committing to his duty as a kamikaze pilot. Furthermore, she blamed him for her children dying in the air raids on Tokyo and told him his parents were also killed during the firebombing.

A few days later, when Shikishima went out to get water, Ota questioned why he let a woman and child stay in his home, asking him if he was pretending to be a good Samaritan. Before Shikishima was about to leave, Ota asked if the woman could breastfeed, to which he responded no. Upon learning this, Ota fed Akiko rice gruel before giving Oishi and Shikishima a bag of her "prized" white rice so Akiko would not starve. Over the next year, she continued to support Shikishima and Oishi's family, becoming an aunt to Akiko.

In May 1947, when Noriko acquired a job in the Ginza district of Tokyo, Ota looked after Akiko in her stead. After Noriko was presumed killed in Godzilla's rampage, Ota encouraged everyone to help each other and did what she could to comfort Akiko.

Later one night, Shikishima thanked Ota for everything before putting Akiko to bed. Before leaving in the early morning, Shikishima left Ota financial aid to raise Akiko in his letter, as he planned to die in Operation Wada Tsumi. During the operation, Ota received a telegram disclosing that Noriko was alive. When Shikishima returned to port, she ran to him with Akiko and the letter, urging him to go see Noriko.
