— Narration during the Piranhadon attack in the 2005 King Kong novelization

Carnahan is a minor character from the 2005 film King Kong. A Venture crewman who joined the rescue party on Skull Island, he was eaten by a Piranhadon. The scene of his death was cut from the theatrical version of the film, but retained in the extended cut.

Name

Carnahan is never named onscreen and is only identified in Christopher Golden's novelization. He shares his name with a sailor from the 1976 King Kong, but this may be coincidental.

History

King Kong (2005)

Carnahan was a sailor on the tramp steamer Venture that was sailing to Skull Island. Like many others, Carnahan became friends with Carl Denham's film crew and spent his free time with them on deck. When the ship sailed into the fog, Carnahan was among the first to know that they were approaching land, since he held a lead-line with which another sailor was measuring the depth. A day later, Carnahan was throwing off ballast on the captain's orders so that the lightened ship could sail away from the rocks. When they were ready to set out to open sea, Jack Driscoll suddenly reported that the natives had kidnapped Ann Darrow from the ship. Carnahan went to rescue her in the same whaler with Driscoll and Englehorn, and then joined the group that went beyond the wall to save the actress from the giant beast Kong.

A Piranhadon grabbing Carnahan in its jaws

After encountering a Ferrucutus and escaping from a herd of Brontosaurus and a pack of Venatosaurus, Carnahan stayed with the group and tried to stop one sailor who went after Bruce Baxter. Soon they were floating on two rafts across the swamp, Carnahan was on one raft with Driscoll, Preston, Choy, Jimmy, and two other sailors. Soon they were attacked by Scorpio-pedes, and then by a huge Piranhadon. The fish destroyed the raft and Carnahan quickly sank to the bottom due to the heavy ammo pack. Driscoll, who was also carrying an ammo pack, soon sank down not far from him. The fish was approaching. Having shed his ballast, Carnahan began to float up, ignoring Driscoll, who was signaling him to stay at the bottom. At the very surface, the Piranhadon grabbed Carnahan and quickly ate him.

As part of the crew of the Venture, Carnahan sailed to Skull Island. He went in search of the kidnapped actress Ann Darrow together with Lumpy, Turcotte, Brandon, and other sailors. As they were crossing the swamp, a Piranhadon attacked them. Almost drowned, Carnahan began to float up, but, before he reached the surface, the Piranhadon grabbed him in its jaws, leaving a trail of blood in the water. Without finishing chewing Carnahan, the predator swam towards Driscoll, but he hid from it among the roots of a tree.
