— Aphrodite's argument against Ares regarding hate and love.

Aphrodite is the goddess of love, lust, passion, pleasure, beauty, and sexuality in ancient Greek mythology. She appears in IDW Publishing's 2016 comic Godzilla: Rage Across Time #2.

Design

Aphrodite bears the appearance of a beautiful young woman with orange hair, puffy lips, eyeshadow, and golden adornments. She wears a white off-shoulder peplos that exposes her from halfway up the chest onwards. Her robe-like sleeves are very baggy and wavy. Her hair reaches down her back and is stylized in a bun, while her side bangs curled at the tips dangle above her shoulders. Around Aphrodite's neck is a golden choker necklace and a tiny golden tiara-like hair clip which keeps her hair bun in place.

Personality

As the Goddess of love and passion, Aphrodite holds much empathy and regard for humankind compared to most of her fellow Olympians, especially Ares and Zeus. When two human factions were mysteriously killed at sea, Aphrodite expressed concern which eventually prompted her admirer, Poseidon, to investigate the incident, though she was unimpressed by his bravado. She stood by her ideals, breaking into argument with the war-courting Ares and confronting Zeus for his egotistical apathy towards humanity. Following their deaths during the battle between Godzilla and the Hydra, Aphrodite and Hera both inspired Zeus to change his ways, steering him down a path of understanding and sympathy towards humankind.

History

Godzilla: Rage Across Time

"Ancient Greece"

When fellow Olympian Hermes rushed into the gods' pantheon to inform Zeus of an urgent matter, Aphrodite was one of two cohorts pushed aside by the troubled messenger. When he reported that two human factions waging war at sea were simultaneously wiped out, Aphrodite expressed concern over the matter, noting that the gods had done little to reward humanity for their prayers in recent times. In the resulting discussion, she confronted Zeus for his dim viewpoint on humanity, berating his ego and stressing the necessity of goodwill. Tilting her chin up, Poseidon volunteered to investigate the disaster at sea, though she was unmoved by his arrogance. As Zeus pondered a show of force to humble humanity, Aphrodite argued that humanity's worship was actually the source of the gods' power. After the King of the Gods stalked off, Aphrodite was one of the first gods to witness the King of the Monsters, Godzilla, arriving in a tidal wave at the foot of Mount Olympus. Remarking on Poseidon's failure, Aphrodite watched as Ares leapt down at the monster, who proceeded to obliterate him with atomic breath. Despaired by the death of her fellow Olympian, Aphrodite stressed to Zeus their powerlessness against the monster. Zeus summoned the Hydra to battle Godzilla, but the multi-headed dragon was killed when Godzilla tackled it into Mount Olympus, collapsing the mountain and killing all of the gods except Zeus.

Abilities

Olympian physiology

Like the other Olympians, Aphrodite has an unnaturally long lifespan. She can also sense prayers from her human worshipers.

Weaknesses

Like her fellow Olympians, Aphrodite's power drew from the faith of her human worshipers. She ultimately died when Godzilla rammed the Hydra into Mount Olympus, causing the home of the gods to collapse into rubble.
