Dobrynya Nikitich (Добрыня Никитич) is a warrior (bogatyr) from Slavic legends. He appeared in the 1956 film Ilya Muromets, where he, along with Ilya Muromets and Alyosha Popovich, led the climactic battle against the Tugars and the giant dragon Zmey Gorynych.

Name

The first name, Dobrynya, probably corresponds to a historical figure who lived at the turn of the first and second millennia. The second name indicates the character's origin, Nikita's son. In the American adaptation of the film, The Sword and the Dragon, the character is named Durbar.

Personality

Dobrynya Nikitich is a renowned warrior and ambassador of Prince Vladimir. He is older and calmer than Alyosha Popovich, and, when possible, helps to eliminate conflicts that his friend gets involved in. Together with him and Ilya Muromets, Dobrynya Nikitich formed the main warrior trio in the final battle with the Tugars and Zmey Gorynych.

History

Ilya Muromets

Having a good reputation with Prince Vladimir, Dobrynya Nikitich was sent as an ambassador to Tsargrad, from where he returned with the news that the city's ruler intended to maintain friendly relations with Kiev. On the occasion of his return, the Prince arranged a grand feast, which was also attended by his friend Alyosha Popovich. At this time, Ilya Muromets came to Kyiv with a monstrous prisoner, Nightingale the Robber, and Nikitich prevented a conflict between the stranger and Popovich, who was being sarcastic about the villager. Having seen the captured monster, Nikitich began to respect the new warrior and became his friend, as did Popovich. The subsequent brilliant victory of Muromets over Idolishche Poganoye solidified their friendship.

In the following days and years, the three warriors defended Kyiv together from the Tugars, but one day, boyar Mishatychka betrayed them, giving the Prince false information about Muromets's intentions. Outraged that the Prince had sent Muromets to the dungeon, Nikitich and Popovich left the city to fight in other regions. Later, when the wanderer informed them that Muromets had been released from captivity, the friends returned to Kyiv and together led its defense against the army of Tsar Kalin. After defeating Zmey Gorynych, they found Kalin abandoned by his army, and Nikitich offered to take him to Kyiv for trial.

Comics

The Sword and the Dragon

Most of the scenes involving the character are the same as in the film. After the death of Zmey Gorynych, Durbar led a detachment that drove the defeated Tugars to the sea, but stopped to watch Tsar Kalin being carried away into captivity.

Trivia

  • In legends, Zmey Gorynych is the main enemy of Dobrynya Nikitich, while in the film they almost never meet each other.
