Emiko Randa (née Matsumoto) is a supporting character in the 2023 Monsterverse television series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

A former Monarch nurse, Emiko married fellow Monarch employee Hiroshi Randa and had a son, Kentaro. Unbeknownst to her, however, her husband led a double life, which she and Kentaro only discovered when the daughter of Hiroshi's other family, Cate, unexpectedly entered their lives in 2015.

History

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

Emiko Matsumoto worked as a nurse at a Monarch medical facility. In 1982, Lee Shaw, a Monarch agent who went missing 20 years prior, unexpectedly reemerged seemingly unaged, and was subsequently brought to Emiko's medical facility and kept in an isolation test as they sought to learn how he survived the past two decades without aging. Emiko took pity on the man, especially after he began a hunger strike after his requests to see Bill Randa went unheeded. After a week, Emiko secretly brought Shaw a Christmas cookie, but while her back is turned, Shaw took her hostage and marched through the facility, demanding to see Bill. Monarch agent and Shaw's "nephew" Hiroshi Randa then arrived to defuse the situation, allowing Emiko to escape as Hiroshi informed Shaw that Bill was dead and that 20 years had passed since he disappeared even though Shaw believed he had only been gone for roughly a week in the Titans' realm. In the aftermath, Hiroshi apologized to Emiko for the ordeal and offered her flowers. She was sympathetic to Shaw's desperation, given his unique circumstances. Hiroshi admitted that he was reluctant to talk to Shaw, who he felt abandoned by and had already mourned. She replied with a smile that Shaw kept his promise to return to him. "Axis Mundi"

In the ensuing years, Hiroshi began a relationship with Emiko, feeling drawn to her as she shared in his world of secrets as members of Monarch, with Hiroshi feeling that he could be open with her in ways he could not be with anyone else. "Cause and Effect" In time, they married and Emiko gave birth to their son, Kentaro, who went on to become an aspiring artist unaware of his family's history with Monarch. In 2014, ahead of Kentaro's art debut, Emiko approached her son and complimented him over a promotional poster's praise of his art along and affirmed that she and his father were proud of him when he showed doubt in his work. After Emiko confirmed that Hiroshi would attend the show, Kentaro excused himself and went outside to photograph the poster. The event was the last time Kentaro saw Hiroshi before he disappeared and was presumed dead. "Parallels and Interiors"

In 2015, Emiko and Kentaro happened upon a woman trespassing in their home. The woman attempted to defuse the situation by telling them that Hiroshi was her father, identifying herself as Cate Randa. The family sat down with Cate to discuss the situation; though rattled, Emiko remained hospitable towards Cate while Kentaro was skepitcal of her claim and asked her to provide proof. Cate showed them pictures of her with her mother, Caroline, and Hiroshi, informing them that Caroline had been married to Hiroshi for 30 years; longer than Emiko had been with Hiroshi. Emiko asked Cate whether she knew what happened to Hiroshi, but Cate became upset, apologized for the intrusion, returned the apartment's keys, and left. Just then, citizens of the city received an evacuation alert, with Kentaro and Emiko regrouping with Cate outside before leading her to a subway shelter, assuring her that it was likely just a drill. Emiko asked Cate if Hiroshi was with her during G-Day, but Cate told her that he wasn't. Cate then experienced a flashback to her encounter with Godzilla on G-Day, though Emiko managed to stop her panicking and calmed her down by hugging her. After being given the all clear to leave, Emiko invited Cate to come back to their apartment for tea. Cate refused as she didn't want to spend more time with the woman her father was cheating with, but relented when Kentaro pushed that she hadn't gotten any answers from her brief trip. Kentaro later took Cate to Hiroshi's office where they discovered files from Bill Randa. "Aftermath"

On another day, Kentaro returned home, where Emiko was looking through photo albums. Seeing how angry he was over Hiroshi's lies, she shredded some of the photos as she realized she was angry too, and he joined her to vent their frustrations together. He stopped, however, upon seeing a photo of Shaw, recognizing him from a photo he found in Hiroshi's office. Emiko identified Shaw as Hiroshi's "uncle" and described him as Hiroshi's only family left after Bill's passing. Kentaro questioned why Hiroshi never mentioned the man to him before two individuals, Tim and Michelle Duvall, knocked on the door and barged into the Randas' apartment, identifying themselves as Monarch agents while asking for Bill's files. Duvall told Emiko that Kentaro stole the files, but she soon concluded that Duvall was lying and cued her son to escape by giving him a picture of Shaw. Emiko distracted Tim and Duvall while Kentaro pretended to retrieve the files and snuck out, with Tim only catching on and realizing who Kentaro was when he saw a photo of Hiroshi. Furious at Kentaro's escape, Tim slammed Bill's empty bag down in front of Emiko. "Departure"

Kentaro and Cate embarked on a journey for answers that took them around the world, discovering in the process that Hiroshi was still alive after all. However, at one point, Kentaro was injured in an incident that resulted in the presumed deaths of Cate, Shaw, and Kentaro's ex-girlfriend, May Olowe-Hewitt, after they fell into a portal to the Titans' realm. Kentaro was moved to a Tokyo hospital where the crestfallen young man tearfully reunited with his mother. Kentaro soon returned home on crutches while Emiko helped him, though Emiko's efforts to talk about his office job only upset him, too consumed with guilt over losing Cate and May to think about moving on to the point of saying he should have joined them in the portal. As he still believed there was a way to save his allies, Emiko comforted him and encouraged him to ignore Monarch Deputy Director Natalia Verdugo's pronouncement that Kentaro's time in Monarch's world was over, believing he could find a way to help his family. "Axis Mundi"

Kentaro later found Hiroshi, who finally reemerged after his mission failed. He went to his family's Tokyo apartment to gather his belongings, though Emiko informed him that she had already given most of it away as she believed he had died. She told him of her previous hopes that he would return to them one day, though their revelations over his infidelity and impact his actions had on their son resulted in her breaking off their relationship as she returned her wedding ring to him. However, Emiko told him that no matter what he did to her, Kentaro deserved a relationship with his father. Kentaro and Hiroshi went on to form a shaky alliance and eventually rescued their family from the rift. "Beyond Logic"
