Destro-King (デストロキング,   Desutoro Kingu) is a cybernetic dragon kaiju who first appeared in episode 2 of the 1973 Toho tokusatsu kaiju series Zone Fighter, "Attack! Destro-King".

Design

Destro-King resembles a cybernetic two-headed dragon. His body extends to a great height, with his necks splitting just before the heads. On his necks, he has bright blue spikes. Both heads have three spikes trailing down their scalps, along with bright pink eyes and long horizontal horns. His heads also possesses small silver mandibles similar to that of Gigan's. Destro-King has a midnight-blue body with several silver spikes and ridges in his chest, as well as a diminutive pair of silver wings on his back. He also has metal toecaps and a long tail that has two spikes coming out the end of it. Perhaps most unusually, Destro-King has a drill embedded in his back, which is placed in between his heads, with silver spikes running down from it.

"Attack! Destro-King"

After the failure of Red Spark and Jikiro, the Baron Garoga sent a commander and grunts to Earth via a Terror-Beast Missile with the intention of killing the Zone Family off. While descending, the missile was seen through the camera lens of Murayama, the brother of Jiro who was close friends with Akira. As the brothers investigated the crash site, Takeru dropped a listening device into their car, eventually finding out Jiro could lead him to the Zone Family's household after the young boy mentioned that Akira was his friend and that Yoichiro might be able to develop the photos of the missile. While Takeru eventually found his way to the Zone household, two disguised Garogas would drive and spot Akira and Jiro at a pond, playing with a remote control boat. Their plan this time was to attack Akira with the boat after taking control of it, although they missed at hit Jiro instead, severely damaging the child's eye. As this was happening, the photo of the Terror-Beast Missile finished developing, with Yoichiro telling Tsukiko to inform Hikaru and Hotaru about the Garogas presence. While driving, Hikaru was informed over a Zobot about how strange the incident with Jiro was, and told him to get home as soon as possible, only to be interrupted by another batch of disguised Garogas who attempted to blow up his car with a bomb, only to fail after the bomb fell off when Hikaru almost hit an old lady crossing the road. As the Garogas tailed him, the aliens would instead be killed by the bomb as they drove over it when the timer expired. After being informed of the two agents deaths, the Baron was tired with the amount of failed attempts at killing the family and fired another Terror-Beast Missile from the Garoga Space Station, this time containing Destro-King. While the missile containing the kaiju slowly made its way to earth, the last of the disguised Garogas attempted to kill Jiro during a surgery to replace his cornea, only to be foiled by Hikaru, Hotaru, and Takeru after the latter explained he was following them in order to help stop the Garogas. Upon losing the advantage, the Garogas fled in their car and shifted out of their disguises. While this was happening, Destro-King's missile finally made it to ground level and collided against it, setting free the monster. Destro-King did not have to wait long until encountering Zone Fighter, as the hero was flying in Mighty Liner with Angel and Junior, with Fighter quickly turning out of the way to avoid ramming into the kaiju. Fighter would then land Mighty Liner and get out with his siblings, instructing them to split up. After his sibling got far away enough, Zone Fighter would then transform into his giant form to confront Destro-King, making sure to wait for the kaiju to make a move before charging him. Destro-King would immediately unleash one of his Heat Rays at Fighter, forcing the hero to cartwheel out of the way as it blew up the ground. Now on the offense, Fighter charged at Destro-King, only for the cyborg to simply duck as Zone Fighter jumped over him, before turning around and letting loose another Heat Ray. Fighter then used Meteor Meteorite Collapse in order to get the Terror-Beast on the ground, quickly pummeling his heads as the kaiju got back up and flipping him over. Fighter then attempted to break the neck of one of Destro-King's heads, twisting it at awkward angles before trying to rip it off altogether. Destro-King then swatted Zone Fighter off with his other head, gaining the upper hand as the hero struggled to get back up. As he approached the downed Meteor Man, Destro-King began to wail on the hero with his heads, increasing the speed of each punch after every blow. He was finally stopped after attempting a double overhead strike, with Fighter catching the heads and pushing the kaiju off of him. Getting ready to finish things before Destro-King could attack again, Zone Fighter summoned in his Meteor Gauntlets and unleashed his Meteor Missile Might attack on the creature. To his horror, Destro-King would appear unfazed after being shot by both volleys of the attack, and to make things worse his energy levels began to diminish as his Zone Marker went to red. As the hero stared in shock, Destro-King went back on the offensive, firing Heat Rays from both heads, encasing Fighter in a red energy before blowing him backwards. Before the Terror-Beast could kill Zone Fighter, Zone Angel and Zone Junior intervened, firing their Proton Beams from their helmet's antennae and severing the cybernetic dragon's right head off. Destro-King then fell backwards, extremely injured as Fighter's siblings recharged him via a Zone Marker Change from their helmet's antennae. Now back to full strength, Fighter got back to his feet and pummeled the weakened Destro-King relentlessly through a variety of attacks, ultimately causing the kaiju to explode after being thrown to the ground.

"The Terror-Beast Base: Invade the Earth!"

Destro-King appeared via flashback as the Baron Garoga contemplated the many defeats they had suffered at the hands of Zone Fighter. The two battled surrounded by yellow mist, with Destro-King offering no resistance as Zone Fighter pummeled him. The flashback then shifted to Spyler being pummeled and eventually exploding, before returning back to the cybernetic dragon, who exploded right after Spyler.

Abilities

Physical abilities

When Zone Fighter charged at Destro-King, he simply ducked while also lowering his heads to the floor, making the hero completely miss and leap over him. After getting back up from Zone Fighter's Meteor Meteorite Collapse, Destro-King attempted an overhand strike, only for it to be caught by the hero, with Destro-King trying to get the hero to let go with his other head by hitting him in the head. After being tackled to the ground, Zone Fighter attempted to rip off one of Destro-King's head before being swatted off with the other head. When Destro-King was able to immobilize the hero, Destro-King took the opportunity to stomp on top of a grounded Zone Fighter while also repeatedly pummeling him with his heads, speeding up after each blow. After slowing down, Destro-King attempted a double overhead strike with his heads, only for it to be caught by Zone Fighter, leaving the Terror-Beast to push down against the hero's grip. His tail has also been noted as being able to easily destroy buildings.[2]

Heat Rays

Destro-King is capable of firing red lasers from each of his mouths, which create explosions upon impact. According to All Kaiju Kaijin (First Volume), this attack is called the Heat Ray (熱光線 Netsu Kosen), has a temperature of 6,000 degrees Celsius, can burn anything within a 40 kilometer radius as well as take out Tokyo Tower. Destro-King contains cybernetics in his body, with a particular part known as the heat ray bag being underneath his left neck which allows him to use this attack.[2] When his fight against Zone Fighter began, Destro-King immediately fired a Heat Ray at Zone Fighter, which exploded against the ground as the hero dodged the blast. When both Heat Rays struck the hero, they briefly encased him in red energy before damaging him and sending him to the ground exhausted.

Burrowing

According to All Kaiju Kaijin (First Volume), Destro-King is able to burrow with the golden drill at the base of his neck at a speed of 200 kilometers per hour. He can also use the spikes on his chest to help him while burrowing. In order to compensate for the large amount of energy it takes to burrow, Destro-King possesses a cybernetic magma tank that is connected to numerous magma ball organs within his body.[2] This ability went unused in the show, however.

Radar

Destro-King's antennae act as radar when he burrows underground.[2]

Intelligence

When Zone Fighter first charged at him, Destro-King ducked down, resulting in the hero jumping completely over him.

Durability

Destro-King was able to shrug off multiple attacks from Zone Fighter, recovering quickly from being knocked to the ground by Meteor Meteorite Collapse, ignoring the hero cracking one of his necks in an attempt to rip it off, and even surviving two volleys of Zone Fighter's Meteor Missile Might, an attack that obliterated Red Spark with just a single volley. One of his heads was severed by Zone Angel and Zone Junior's Meteor Proton Beams, leaving him severely weakened. Destro-King would later endure a Meteor Kick to his remaining head from a recharged Zone Fighter, crumpling it, before being thrown the ground and exploding.

Roar

Destro-King uses altered Muruchi roars that are more distorted and stuttery. Destro-King's pained roars are extremely high pitched and sound like trilling.

Trivia

  • Since Destro-King's heads are operated by the suit actor's arms, the drill at the top of Destro-King's neck is where the suit actor's head would be.
