Gilmaras (ギルマラス,   Girumarasu) is a reptilian kaiju who first appeared in episode 7 of the 1973 Toho tokusatsu kaiju series Zone Fighter, titled "Zone Family's Critical Moment!".

Design

Gilmaras resembles a vaguely fish-like dragon with blue scales running along most of his body. He has yellow fins on his head, similar to Titanosaurus, a large crest fin which runs down his back from his head, along with webbed hands. He has a yellow chest, with spikes running down the center of his stomach, and an additional pair of spikes at his sides that go all the way up to his shoulders and down to his back and tail. Gilmaras's tail is long, scaly, and blue with a yellow underside and possesses a silver spike at its tip. His eyes are bright yellow, and he has a long pointed snout which can be removed. In some scenes, Gilmaras's snout is perfectly straight, while in others it curves down.

Zone Fighter

"Zone Family's Critical Moment!"

Garoga 13, disguised as Hotaru, had been sent by the Baron Garoga to infiltrate the Zone Family in an attempt to dispose of them all. Throughout the day, she had tried killing the Zone Family by way of numerous schemes, but her plans constantly failed. As a last resort, she planted a time bomb set to go off in an hour within the hotel room where the Zone Family were staying at. While planting the bomb, she was caught by Tsukiko and revealed her true form. Garoga 13 then began to attack, but Hikaru entered the room and transformed into Zone Fighter, and the two fought, eventually making their way outside. After gaining the upper hand over the alien impersonator, Fighter threw the Garoga over a cliff into a crater, with the evil alien exploding upon hitting the bottom. Unfortunately for Zone Fighter, a Terror-Beast Missile rested at the bottom of the cliff and released a kaiju after Garoga 13's death: Gilmaras. Despite being larger than Zone Fighter, Gilmaras put up a feeble fight against the Meteor Man, repeatedly missing strikes and failing to catch up to a running Fighter. However, Gilmaras refused to give up and took off the front portion of his nose, revealing a hole that began to spew fire at Fighter. Although Gilmaras was unable to scorch the hero, Zone Fighter was forced to back away from the flames, before Gilmaras sucked them back in and put his nose back on. Gilmaras then ran up to Zone Fighter and attempted to grapple with him, only for the Meteor Man to turn the tables on the reptilian by grabbing his neck and throwing him to the ground. After being overpowered at close range again, Gilmaras attempted to take his nose off once more, only to have it snatched off by Zone Fighter before his hands could reach it. Fighter then took the nose and shoved the pointed end in the hole, clogging it up and stopping the flames from being unleashed. Little effort was required to defeat Gilmaras after this, and the reptile met his end after being shot by a volley of Fighter's Meteor Missile Might, being launched over a mountain and exploding.

Abilities

Physical abilities

Gilmaras displayed little prowess in hand-to-hand combat, missing several swipes against Zone Fighter and failing to land any significant blows, while also struggling to even grapple with the hero. He rolled back onto his feet almost instantly on one occasion when the hero threw him to the ground.

Nose

Gilmaras has a sharp, pointed nose which can be removed and reattached, revealing a cavity out of which fire can be expelled and sucked back in. He used the flames to briefly keep Zone Fighter at bay. Later in their fight, Zone Fighter plugged up Gilmaras's nose by sticking the pointed end in the hole where it detached. According to All Kaiju Kaijin (First Volume), the temperature of the flames reaches 12,000 degrees Celsius.[3]

Missiles

According to All Kaiju Kaijin (First Volume), Gilmaras can shoot missiles from his torso.[3] This ability went unused in the series.

Durability

Zone Fighter first knocked down Gilmaras with a surprise chop to the side, after which he struggled to regain his footing. After enduring further physical blows from the hero, including a Meteor Chop, Meteor Roundhouse Kick, and Meteor Punch, and having his detachable nose shoved back into his fire-spitting cavity. Gilmaras fell to a Meteor Missile Might volley, which launched him high into the air and over a mountain before he exploded.
