Mechagodzilla (メカゴジラ Mekagojira) is a G-Guard mecha who appeared in the 1997-1998 television show Godzilla Island and was the eponym of the show's 11th story arc. This Mechagodzilla was one of several machines constructed by G-Guard to help keep peace on Godzilla Island and was often deployed to assist the monsters living there, including Godzilla, against the Xilien' many invasion attempts. Mechagodzilla became a particular favorite of G-Guard Commander Beisuke Jinguji and he often used the machine both as a weapon and a vehicle.
Two similar robots, Fake Godzilla and Black Mechagodzilla, were used by the Xiliens in various plots, with Mechagodzilla battling the latter of these.
Name

Mechagodzilla's name is a combination of "mecha," which is derived from "mechanical," and "Godzilla" (ゴジラ Gojira).
Design
The toy used to portray this Mechagodzilla is a modified Bandai The Godzilla Collection figure of the Heisei Mechagodzilla design.
Origins
Mechagodzilla was one of several mechas constructed by G-Guard to defend humanity and help keep peace on Godzilla Island, along with Moguera, Proto-Moguera, Jet Jaguar (briefly seen in the Introducing Torema arc), Medical Jet Jaguar, and Fire Fighter Jet Jaguar. These mechas could either be piloted or act autonomously, though they could not disobey G-Guard commander Beisuke Jinguji's orders in the latter case.

Godzilla Island
Introducing Torema
G-Guard deployed Mechagodzilla alongside Moguera and Jet Jaguar when the UFO Vabaruda began to travel towards Godzilla Island, due to Commander Beisuke Jinguji's insistence that the war between humans and Xiliens should not have to involve the monsters on Godzilla Island. However, the three robots were quickly shot down by the UFO's beam cannons.
King Ghidorah
Mechagodzilla was undergoing repairs alongside Moguera during King Ghidorah's attack as a result of being shot down by the Vabaruda.
The Trial of Godzilla
Having reported Battra and Megalon to be approaching Godzilla Island during Godzilla's trial, Beisuke ordered Mothra and Rodan to stop the invading monsters with Mechagodzilla and Moguera acting as backup. Mechagodzilla came to Mothra's defense, shooting Battra's wing with his eye lasers while Torema similarly attacking the Black Mothra with the Panna Torte's laser beams. After Zagreth realized that Torema was assisting the Godzilla Island monsters and mechs, she ordered Megalon and Battra to retreat.
Mecha-King Ghidorah
After Beisuke returned to Godzilla Island under the mind control of the Xiliens, he ordered Mechagodzilla and Moguera to place metal collars on the various monster residents of Godzilla Island. Besuke called for Mechagodzilla to attack Torema after she realized that he was being mind-controlled and called him out for his cruel behavior, but Godzilla flipped Mechagodzilla over before the robot could do anything and then proceeded to tail-whip Moguera. When Mecha-King Ghidorah returned to attack the island, Beisuke, now freed of the mind control by Torema, joined the fight by piloting Mechagodzilla, wanting to win back the monster's respect after causing them to suffer. He fired eye lasers at Mecha-King Ghidorah, who responded with laser beams, knocking Mechagodzilla to the ground. However, Mechagodzilla quickly got back up and rammed Mecha-King Ghidorah, knocking the cyborg over. After seeing this and hearing King Caesar's encouragement, the other monsters joined the fight to help Godzilla and Mechagodzilla. After Godzilla redirected Mecha-King Ghidorah's right head to fire on the left head, Mechagodzilla, King Caesar, and Gorosaurus aided him in destroying the left head, causing the cyborg to finally retreat to space. Beisuke was praised by the monsters of Godzilla Island for his role in the battle.
Mysteries of Godzilla Island
Lucas explained to Torema that Mechagodzilla and Moguera are autonomous and can also be piloted.
SpaceGodzilla's Spirit
When Godzilla became possessed by SpaceGodzilla's spirit and attacked the other monsters on Godzilla Island by stealing their auras, Beisuke deployed Mechagodzilla and Moguera in an attempt to stop him before he could reach Mothra Leo. However, Godzilla easily defeated Moguera with his atomic breath and resisted Mechagodzilla's eye lasers. Godzilla then responded with atomic breath, knocking Mechagodzilla to the ground with ease. Beisuke called on Mechagodzilla and Moguera to get up, but they did not respond.
Mechagodzilla
After Zagreth challenged Torema to a duel, she arrived in Mechagodzilla, while Zagreth chose Black Mechagodzilla. After Torema told the monsters watching to stay out of the duel no matter what and the two briefly insulted each other, Zagreth decided to set the rules of the duel as a quick-draw showdown in which they would take five steps away from each other and then turn and shoot. However, Zagreth cheated and shot Mechagodzilla before the five steps were over, knocking it to the ground. The outraged monsters attacked Black Mechagodzilla and kicked it to the ground.
Goodbye, Torema
After Kamacuras tricked Godzilla and Torema into a trap on Matango Island, Kamacuras and Mecha-King Ghidorah attacked the G-Guard base and defeated all the monsters and robots there, including Mechagodzilla. Kamacuras returned to try to convince the monsters to join him and Zagreth by lying that Godzilla died on Matango Island, convincing Baragon and Gorosaurus to join them. Beisuke piloted Mechagodzilla when the four kaiju returned to attack the base. Mechagodzilla prepared to fight Mecha-King Ghidorah, but the cyborg told Baragon and Gorosaurus to fight Besuke instead, his hesitation to attack the pair costing him a chance to fight back. However, Godzilla appeared and fought Mecha-King Ghidorah, with the other monsters joining his side in driving the cyborg into retreat. Mechagodzilla later watched with all the other monsters and robots on the island when Torema left to try and defeat Zagreth.
Introducing Misato
After Randeth, who the Giant Dark Emperor employed after firing Zagreth, infected the monsters of Godzilla Island using a smoke-filled dance-globin and forced them to dance using a giant radio, Beisuke piloted Mechagodzilla to try and shoot the radio down. However, Randeth responded by maxing out the speaker's volume, knocking Mechagodzilla out of the sky and causing it to malfunction and begin joining in with the dance. In response, Besuke simply turned the mecha off.
Second Generation Mothra
Mechagodzilla and Moguera assisted Misato Jinguji, the daughter of Beisuke who was piloting Medical Jet Jaguar, in bringing Mothra's egg to Mothra's Cave, where they hoped Mothra Leo would help look after it. When Megalon and Destoroyah defeated Mothra Leo and kidnapped the egg, Beisuke ordered both Mechagodzilla and Moguera into action, though the two robots were ultimately defeated by the wicked kaiju.
Dororin
As the new Xilien pawn Dororin attacked the G-Guard base after tricking Godzilla and Gigan into fighting due to his shapeshifting abilities, Beisuke piloted Mechagodzilla to defend the base and wrestled with the shapeshifting monster. Mechagodzilla blasted Dororin with eye lasers, destroying its entire body, though it quickly reformed itself. After being blasted once again, Dororin temporarily returned to its orb form so that it could appear behind Mechagodzilla for a sneak attack. Mechagodzilla hovered into the air after enduring Dororin's eye lasers and blasted Dororin once again, though the monster later overpowered the robot. While Mechagodzilla struggled against Dororin, Godzilla finally arrived to fight the shapeshifter himself after hearing an important message from Moguera, at which point Mechagodzilla withdrew from the battle.
Anguirus
After a strange cactus suddenly appeared on the island, G-Guard decided to make it the focus of a new area called Cactus Square, with Mechagodzilla being used to hammer a sign into the ground so it could be recognized as such. After the cactus, actually a Xilien pawn called Gororin, rampaged through the island and attacked the monsters, Beisuke arrived in Anguirus's Valley to apologize to the ankylosaur monster after his previous harsh words to him when he misunderstood Anguirus attacking Gororin. He exited the mech to apologize to Anguirus more personally, and though Anguirus was reluctant to accept, Gororin reappeared and attempted to flatten Beisuke, knocking Mechagodzilla over in the process. After Anguirus pinned Gororin to the side of a mountain, Beisuke attempted to fix Mechagodzilla so that he could help Anguirus, but was unsuccessful. Gororin was defeated anyway thanks to the combined forces of Anguirus, Godzilla, and Nao Koda piloting Moguera.
Fire Rodan
Beisuke briefly considered using Mechagodzilla to fight Neo-Hedorah, but was stopped by his hunger pains, leaving him unable to effectively pilot the machine.
Lucas
Beisuke piloted Mechagodzilla to help out when Misato's Tart Coupe began to malfunction. Mechagodzilla, however, also began to behave on its own, due to the abilities of the Xilien spy Cameron, and made a beeline for Godzilla to fire eye lasers at him. Besuke tried to explain to Godzilla, though the kaiju chose to simply shoot Mechagodzilla down with atomic breath. Mechagodzilla later got back up to continue the fight after Moguera and Medical Jet Jaguar arrived to attack Godzilla and Anguirus, Baragon, and Gorosaurus arrived to assist the King of Monsters.
To make the situation even worse, a laser cannon joined in the brawl and fired on all involved, though Misato was able to hack into the computer system and reverse Cameron's actions, allowing Godzilla and the other monsters to escape as the machines all froze. Besuke found himself able to control Mechagodzilla again, though he chose to leave the robot in place as G-Guard and all of Godzilla Island's biological monsters surrounded the occupied base.
The Secret of G Island
Mechagodzilla and Moguera attempted to use their respective laser attacks to destroy the invisible barrier created by the Xiliens to remove all the breathable air from Godzilla Island, but were struck down by the lightning generated by the wall, being rendered inoperable as a result.
Conclusion
Beisuke attempted to send Mechagodzilla and Moguera into battle against Hyper Mecha-King Ghidorah when Zagreth returned piloting the machine, but could not since the launch catapult had been frozen by Hyper Mecha-King Ghidorah's ice breath.
When Zagreth reappeared to attack Godzilla Island using Hyper Mecha-King Ghidorah, Beisuke joined his allies in battle against the monster by piloting Mechagodzilla, firing the robot's eye lasers at the same time as the Panna Torte and Tart Coupe used their beams against the machine, blasting off one of its heads. Mechagodzilla looked on as Godzilla destroyed the monster's central head in a beam-fight, Torema almost killed Zagreth, Randeth returned in the Gyotengo, Cameron activated the warp gate under the Giant Dark Emperor's orders, and Misato reversed the warp gate. While this reversal defeated the Giant Dark Emperor, Gyotengo, and Hyper Mecha-King Ghidorah, it proved more powerful than expected and began to suck in everything around it. Mechagodzilla held onto one of the gate's pillars and reversed its head to combine its lasers with the attacks of the Panna Torte, Tart Coupe, Mothra Leo, Godzilla and Junior, successfully destroying the warp gate.
With the Xilien invasion defeated, G-Guard was disbanded and the island became a true paradise for monsters.
Abilities
Eye lasers

Mechagodzilla can fire rainbow-colored beams from its eyes, similar to the Showa Mechagodzilla's Space Beams. They were able to destroy Mecha-King Ghidorah's weakened head when combined with Godzilla's atomic breath and King Caesar's lightning attack, and one of Hyper Mecha-King Ghidorah's heads when combined with blasts from the Panna Torte and Tart Coupe. They also successfully destroyed Dororin's entire body each time they were fired at the shapeshifter, though the monster quickly reformed itself on each occasion. In the final story arc, they were combined with Mechagodzilla's mouth laser, the lasers from both the Panna Torte and Tart Coupe, Mothra Leo's antennae lasers, and the atomic breaths of both Godzilla and Junior to destroy the warp gate. However, they were incapable of causing harm to Godzilla himself while he was possessed by SpaceGodzilla's ghost, and merely irritated him in the Lucas arc.

Mouth laser
Mechagodzilla is also capable of firing a yellow laser from its mouth, similar to that of Black Mechagodzilla, which it used in an all-out attack against Megalon and Destoroyah. This mouth laser was combined with Mechagodzilla's eye lasers, the lasers from both the Panna Torte and Tart Coupe, Mothra Leo's antennae lasers and the atomic breaths of both Godzilla and Junior to destroy the warp gate.
Physical abilities
Mechagodzilla was strong enough to knock Mecha-King Ghidorah over when Beisuke Jinguji rammed the mech into the cybernetic monster. Mechagodzilla also wrestled with the shapeshifting monster Dororin, providing itself equal in strength, and later wrestled with some biological monsters alongside Moguera and Medical Jet Jaguar during the chaos caused by Cameron.
Durability
Mechagodzilla demonstrates impressive durability on some occasions. While it was briefly knocked to the ground by Mecha-King Ghidorah's laser beams, it was easily able to get back up without any significant damage. Additionally, though suffering damage from loud soundwaves and a massive fall did cause the mech to malfunction, it did not directly damage Mechagodzilla to the point of being incapable of moving, and it merely began joining in with the monster's dance. While Mechagodzilla was rendered inoperable from a blast of Godzilla's red atomic breath, a blast of the regular atomic breath on another occasion only briefly stopped it. Dororin's battle with Mechagodzilla also seemed to deal no lasting damage to the machine, with blasts from a laser cannon dealing a similar lack of damage.
Flight
Mechagodzilla is capable of flight via jet boosters and can battle opponents in the air.
Artificial intelligence
Mechagodzilla can be controlled either by a pilot or via artificial intelligence, though it cannot disobey the commands of Beisuke Jinguji when acting autonomously.
Hammer

Mechagodzilla briefly used a hammer to erect a sign establishing Cactus Square as a location and a monument of the island, though it never used this tool in combat.
Head rotation
In a similar manner to the Showa Mechagodzilla, this Mechagodzilla can turn its head around to attack targets behind it, using this ability on the warp gate.
Weaknesses
While a powerful mecha, Mechagodzilla was badly damaged on several occasions.
Mechagodzilla was shot down by the Vabaruda, requiring it to be repaired. Godzilla was easily able to flip Mechagodzilla over despite the effects of the metal collar when Beisuke Jinguji was being mind-controlled by Zagreth. Godzilla also swiftly defeated Mechagodzilla with atomic breath while he was possessed by SpaceGodzilla's ghost. In the 11th story arc, Mechagodzilla was knocked to the ground and left smoking after Zagreth cheated in the duel between her and Torema and shot Black Mechagodzilla's weapons point-blank in Mechagodzilla's face. Megalon and Destoroyah were able to defeat Mechagodzilla and Moguera in a battle offscreen despite the robots having the initial upper hand. Lightning generated by the invisible wall created by the Xiliens defeated Mechagodzilla with ease, rendering it inoperable.
Additionally, Mechagodzilla's inability to disobey Beisuke Jinguji's commands proved problematic when he was mind-controlled by the Xiliens, and Mechagodzilla's mechanical nature left it vulnerable to being hacked.

Trivia
- This is the first incarnation of Mechagodzilla to fight alongside Godzilla rather than against him, though the incarnation of Mechagodzilla that appeared in Get Going! Godzilland also became friends with Godzilla after starting out as enemies.
- This incarnation did briefly become enemies with Godzilla on three occasions: while Beisuke Jinguji was being-mind controlled by Zagreth in the Mecha-King Ghidorah arc, while Godzilla was possessed by SpaceGodzilla’s ghost in the SpaceGodzilla's Spirit arc, and while Mechagodzilla was being controlled by the Xilien spy Cameron in the Lucas arc.
- In a reversal of the Heisei Mechagodzilla on which this design is based, this Mechagodzilla possesses rainbow eye lasers and a yellow mouth laser.
- This is the only incarnation of Mechagodzilla to appear in the same media as Fake Godzilla but have no relation to it, with the latter a separate robot controlled by the Xiliens.
- Mechagodzilla and Moguera come into conflict with every organic inhabitant of Godzilla Island at some point in the show except for the three Mothras: Mother Mothra, Mothra Leo, and Baby Mothra.
- Mechagodzilla appears in the most episodes of any of G-Guard's mechs.
