The Garoga Spider (ガロガスパイダー,   Garoga Supaidā) is a spider kaiju created by Toho that appears in the ninth episode of Zone Fighter, "Find the Secret of the Red Spider!".

Name

The Garoga Spider's Japanese name, Garoga Supaidā (ガロガスパイダー), is simply a combination of Garoga (ガロガ), the name of the race who deployed it, and supaidā (スパイダー), the Japanese word for spider. The creature is also sometimes referred to as the Red Spider (赤いクモ or レッドスパイダー), including the name of its debut episode, "Find the Secret of the Red Spider!" Additionally, the book Toho Special Effects All Monster Encyclopedia erroneously refers to the Garoga Spider as Garopa Spider (ガロパスパイダー), albeit only once.[1]

Design

The Garoga Spider is a giant crimson spider, with some black highlights covering parts of its legs and abdomen.

History

Showa era

Zone Fighter

"Find the Secret of the Red Spider!"

After watching Hikaru patrolling for malicious activity in Mighty Liner, the Baron Garoga spoke to himself about how the Garoga Spider would be the end of the Zone Family and mankind. He was then informed by a Garoga commander about two lions that were being transported inside of a truck; the commander added that he would be sending the Garoga Spider after it. Hikaru spotted the Garoga Spider while on foot, causing the crimson spider to take off flying. The spider eventually reached the truck and waited for a disguised Garoga to unlock the back of it. However, it was thwarted from turning the lions by the arrival of the Zone siblings, fleeing after the heroes defeated all the Garogas. During the confrontation, the Garoga commander revealed that it could turn any animal into a pawn for the Garoga. Baron later directly communicated with the Zone Family, claiming that mankind had long dominated animals and the Garoga Spider would set them free. While the Zone siblings looked for the missing Garoga Spider, it made its presence known at a zoo after a gorilla escaped its enclosure. As the Zone siblings chased after it again, they were interrupted by another horde of Garogas, allowing the spider to fly after the escaped gorilla. The spider descended after locating the gorilla and landed on its shoulder. The Garoga Spider stuck its stinger into the primate and began drinking its blood, transforming it into Garoga Gorilla. The Garoga commander explained that any animal bitten by the spider would mutate into a Terror-Beast. After fulfilling its mission, the Garoga Spider was be told by the commander to seek out more animals to mutate, flying away in a hurry. Unfortunately for the spider, it landed on a pair of railroad tracks and was killed by an oncoming train.

Abilities

Flight

The Garoga Spider is able to fly at a moderate speed, allowing it to locate and descend on its prey. After being spotted by Hikaru, the Garoga Spider took off into the air, eventually making its way to a truck containing two lions, and hovered in the air as it waited for the disguised Garoga to unlock the back of it, intending to mutate them before being forced to retreat. Later, it chased after an escaped gorilla in order to successfully mutate it.

Blood-sucking

The Garoga Spider is able to drink the blood of its victim through a bite, which causes the victim to undergo rapid growth and mutation. It demonstrated this on a zoo gorilla by sticking a stinger into it, mutating it into the Garoga Gorilla.

Weaknesses

The Garoga Spider is not a very durable kaiju, as it was immediately killed after being struck by a train after landing on train tracks.
