The Magnetic Monster (超磁力怪獣,   Chōjiryoku Kaijū, lit. Supermagnetism Monster) is a size-changing turtle monster that appeared in the 1978 Godzilla episode, "The Magnetic Terror."

Design

The Magnetic Monster is a giant turtle. Its shell, limbs, and beak, as well as the antennae and comb on its head, are blue in DVD editions, though they were originally purple in the show's initial airing. The rest of its body, including its plastron, are greyish-black. It has two yellow eyes, both surrounded by a curved black spot.

History

Godzilla

"The Magnetic Terror"

The Magnetic Monster rose from the ocean to feed on anything it could. It brought down a plane, but the Calico managed to save the survivor. The Magnetic Monster soon attacked an oil refinery in the Arctic and fed, but Godzilla arrived. Before the monster could be killed, however, an oil fire surrounded the Calico and threatened to destroy it. Godzilla was forced to retreat to save his friends while the Magnetic Monster disappeared to the sea.

Not long afterwards, the Magnetic Monster swallowed the mini-sub that Captain Majors and Brock were in as they tried to track the monster. It arrived on land again and this time Godzilla needed to destroy it to save his allies.

The two battled, and the Magnetic Monster began absorbing all the magnetic waves from the pole and began growing in size until it was much bigger than Godzilla, making it seem unstoppable until it reached the center of the ice pole where the magnetic forces were at their strongest. Not able to hold any more, the Magnetic Monster exploded, and the mini-sub was saved.

Abilities

Physical abilities

When Godzilla attempted to lift the Magnetic Monster off the ground, he was able to stand his ground and remain anchored to the Antarctic glacier. The Magnetic Monster was also strong enough to breach through thick sheets of ice and land on its surface. When fighting Godzilla, he was fast enough to dodge the reptilian's nose flames, and broke free of his hold after absorbing more magnetic energy. After pulling Godzilla off the ground, the Magnetic Monster attempted to crush him with his beak, although he was unsuccessful.

Magnetic waves

The Magnetic Monster can emit light blue magnetic waves from his mouth that will draw objects toward him or repel objects away. They were strong enough to draw a plane out of the sky and into his mouth, suck in an entire oil rig site, and pull in the Calico, Godzooky, and the Mini-Sub. These waves also deflected Godzilla's laser beams and beam-locked with his fire breath, ultimately causing the flames to split off into fireballs that shot in multiple directions. The Magnetic Monster used the waves' repelling capabilities to stop Godzilla from picking him up, producing a concussive blast strong enough to knock Godzilla down. At his largest size, the Magnetic Monster's waves pulled Godzilla off the ground and into his mouth.

Magnetic force

When the Calico came close to the Magnetic Monster, it was reported the monster had a magnetic field equal in energy to that of the Earth's. When he was swimming towards the South Pole, Quinn Darian hypothesized that if he reached his destination, the polar ice caps would be completely blown off the Earth. This would later be proven correct, as some of the ice caps rapidly sunk into the ocean from his presence, while others crumbled and fell in. The Magnetic Monster's presence also caused the Mini-Sub to completely short-circuit and shut down, while also blocking the Godzilla Signal, preventing him from being summoned.

Amphibiousness

The Magnetic Monster first emerged from the waters of Antarctica to swallow a plane whole. He later swarm near an oil rig before clambering onto land in order to attack the site. After fleeing from Godzilla, he began swimming towards the South Pole, before targeting the Mini-Sub with his magnetic waves.

Intelligence

Rather than pursue Godzilla when the reptilian went to save the Calico, the Magnetic Monster took the opportunity to flee in search of more food for himself.

Size changing

The Magnetic Monster can grow to gigantic sizes by absorbing magnetic waves. In his first encounter with Godzilla, he was half the size of the reptilian. However, upon feeding on more and more magnetic energy, he quickly grew to the same size of Godzilla in their second encounter. While Godzilla grappled him from behind, the Magnetic Monster began absorbing more magnetic waves, causing him to dwarf Godzilla in size.

Weaknesses

Quinn Darian hypothesized that if the Magnetic Monster absorbed too much energy, he would be unable to handle the power. This was proven correct after Godzilla lured him to the center of the South Pole, causing the turtle to explode after absorbing too much energy.

Trivia

  • In his final moments, the Magnetic Monster grew into one of the tallest monsters in the Godzilla series, towering over the 400-foot Godzilla. Matt Frank has stated that Magita, a monster he illustrated for Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, was about the same size as the Magnetic Monster's maximum height.[2][3]
