We call him Godzilla. He keeps the other monsters in check. They’re naturally scared of him. He stops them from growing to full size and strength, and we do whatever it takes to keep him happy.

— Drayer (Godzilla: Oblivion #1)

Godzilla (ゴジラ,   Gojira) is a kaiju who appears in IDW Publishing's 2016 comic book miniseries Godzilla: Oblivion. Transported from an alternate dimension in which he reigns supreme on a post-apocalyptic Earth, Godzilla faced off against humanity from two different Earths as he and his fellow kaiju fight for dominance in both dimensions.

Name

Main article: Godzilla#Name.

Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ), comes from a combination of the Japanese approximation of "gorilla" (ゴリラ,   gorira), and kujira (クジラ), the Japanese word for "whale."

Design

Godzilla's design is based on that of Toho's Heisei era films, generally resembling his early Heisei counterpart. The color of his eyes is inconsistent, appearing green, orange, or blue with yellow, occasionally tangerine, sclera. His skin is notably lighter than his onscreen counterpart, appearing charcoal grey, and his dorsal fins appear slightly puffier. His overall build appears slightly thinner as well, and his claws are noticeably larger/longer. When utilizing his atomic breath, Godzilla’s dorsal fins glow blue concealed in a white aura before firing the beam out of his mouth.

Personality

Godzilla is incredibly aggressive and territorial, asserting dominance over the other monsters in the alternate Earth after they stripped humanity of its ecological position. During his "reign", Godzilla proactively kept other monsters from growing out of control and to their full strength and/or maturity. Though the surviving humans of Earth-2 did what they could to appease him, Godzilla proves incredibly hostile once provoked, swiftly breaking into pursuit of Dr. Eli Talbert's team when they blared sirens on a bridge to gain his attention. He did not cease his offense until he arrived in Earth-1, where he promptly engaged King Ghidorah in a prolonged battle. Godzilla displayed visible shock when Operation Thunder Lizard, a military operation consisting of two bomber planes firing two pairs of nuclear missiles, blazed him in a giant fiery explosion over the sea. He displayed intense rage towards the various mechs employed against him, but later redirected his wrath towards the kaiju sent from his home dimension. As Dr. Talbert and Mishiko Yamada evacuated humanity to Earth-2, Godzilla took notice and approached them.

Origins

Godzilla, along with the other kaiju that appear in the series, is of an alternate dimension separate from that of the main characters. Ten years prior to the present events, the alternate Earth underwent an apocalyptic event during which the kaiju brought an end to human civilization. The strongest of them, Godzilla himself, swiftly established dominance over the other giant monsters and in turn, took on the role of the Earth's ecological "ruler". Through unspecified means, Godzilla kept the other giant monsters in line to prevent them from reaching full maturity and/or strength.

History

Godzilla: Oblivion

Godzilla: Oblivion #1

As Dr. Eli Talbert and his colleagues activated his dimensional rift for the first time, Godzilla's roar blasted from the portal. Despite the danger, Dr. Talbert and his employer, Ms. Yamada, breached into an alternate Earth, where they found themselves under attack by a Rodan. Suddenly, an enormous robot appeared before them and killed the pterosaur. In no time, Eli, Ms. Yamada, and their surviving bodyguards were picked up by the G-Wrangler Strike Force while the nearby machine fended off an oncoming flock of Rodans. In their escape from the battle, G-Wrangler Strike Force team leader Drayer explained how Godzilla came to power in this alternate Earth where he made it his purpose to prevent the other monsters from rising to power and growing out of control. Immediately afterward, Godzilla himself appeared as the people crossed a bridge, though he seemed to have not noticed them. Unbeknownst to Godzilla, King Ghidorah had followed Eli and Ms. Yamada back to their Earth, before being sealed there for the time being.

Godzilla: Oblivion #2

Immediately as Dr. Talbert and company appeared in "Earth-2", Godzilla roared and roamed nearby without notice. As the group discussed with Drayer and his men about defeating King Ghidorah back in "Earth-1", Godzilla fired his atomic breath at an unknown target. Before long, Earth-1's forces attract Godzilla's attention with a siren, provoking him into pursuit. He proceeded to chase the vehicle all the way into the portal and appearing on Earth-1 as the newly-built dimensional rift was shut down, allowing the King of Monsters to reunite with King Ghidorah on the other side.

Godzilla: Oblivion #3

Face-to-face with King Ghidorah on Earth-1, Godzilla immediately blasted the three-headed dragon with his atomic breath, initiating their fight. His opponent retaliated with his gravity beams, though Godzilla returned the favor by tearing off the top of the Washington Monument and utilizing it as a weapon off-panel. King Ghidorah proceeded to knock Godzilla down, only to be blasted by his atomic breath twice. Godzilla roared in victory with his enemy down, before suddenly finding himself kicked in the back. The ensuing battle took to the sky as King Ghidorah carried off Godzilla high up and far out over open ocean. With little options, the US military was granted permission to conduct Operation Thunder lizard. Two bomber jets flew at the monsters before firing a barrage of nuclear missiles, resulting in a massive explosion that envelops both monsters. When one of the jets flew down to determine the status of the monsters, Godzilla erupted from the water and caught the plane with his jaws. Before long, Godzilla was met with a helicopter deployed to lure him further out to sea, which he swiftly destroyed with a claw swipe after missing with his atomic breath. Running lower and lower on options, an army of modified duplicates of Mechagodzilla were deployed to attack him.

Godzilla: Oblivion #4

Godzilla founded himself confronted by an army of Mechagodzillas, which he immediately began to dispatch with his atomic breath. Surrounded, Godzilla endured the barrage of the robots' attacks while other plans to defeat him were carried out. As King Ghidorah's corpse was retrieved to be converted into a cyborg, Godzilla continued to eradicate his aggressors. Right as Mecha-King Ghidorah activated, Godzilla broke into the facility housing it with the intent of confronting it. While Godzilla began to fight Mecha-King Ghidorah however, the inhabitants of Earth-2 opened a portal from their side, unleashing all of the other monsters onto Earth-1.

Godzilla: Oblivion #5

As Godzilla and Mecha-King Ghidorah fought, all the other monsters from Earth-2 appeared, some of which proceeded to confront the two while others wandered off to explore their new environment. As Mothra and Anguirus began to inflict damage on Mecha-King Ghidorah, Godzilla found himself facing off multiple monsters, including Mothra and a mature Rodan individual. The ensuing destruction spread as the monsters began to take siege of the surrounding environment. Meanwhile, Godzilla tore off Mecha-King Ghidorah's mechanical head, finishing off both it and its pilot, Ridley, once and for all. Subsequently, Godzilla faced off Hedorah as the population of Earth-1 was evacuated via organic cell-generated portals. As Dr. Talbert and Ishiko Yamada shut down the dimensional rift permanently, Godzilla proceeded to approach them and fired his atomic breath in their vicinity, possibly killing them. Subsequently, Godzilla and all the other monsters found themselves confined to their new domain on Earth-1 forever with the cell-generated portals' mass self-deactivation.

Abilities

Physical abilities

Godzilla is incredibly strong and competent in physical combat, establishing dominance over his fellow kaiju on their native Earth prior to the events of the series. He displayed prowess in his fight against King Ghidorah in issue #3, though it mostly occurred off-panel. He later tore open the hanger to the facility housing Mecha-King Ghidorah in production. In addition to his strength, Godzilla has shown to be fast enough to knock human aircraft out of mid-air with his bare hands and jaws easily. He caught a swift bomber plane in his jaws moments after surviving the aircraft's payload.

Atomic breath

Godzilla’s atomic breath is powerful enough to inflict tremendous pain upon King Ghidorah, though it left no visible external damage. It obliterated the Mechagodzilla army sent against him and inflicted incredible harm on Hedorah. Though Godzilla also utilized his atomic breath against Mothra, the effects it had on her are unknown.

Durability

Godzilla was inferred by Drayer to be immune to conventional weapons. Godzilla's greatest feat would come in the form of surviving Operation Thunder Lizard blowing up in point-blank proximity, revealing himself to be completely unscathed in contrast to his enemy. Earlier, Godzilla endured King Ghidorah's gravity beams and physical blows while sustaining nothing more than visible pain. Godzilla displayed mere annoyance at the firepower of the Mechagodzilla army. Godzilla was unharmed by Mothra's arc lightning.

Intelligence

Godzilla stood his ground against King Ghidorah by using his wits and the surrounding environment to his advantage, going as far as to utilize the Washington Monument as a weapon and utilizing his atomic breath in a surprise attack. He defeated Mecha-King Ghidorah permanently by ripping off his opponent’s mechanical head.

Amphibiousness

Godzilla is equally competent in combat both on solid ground and in bodies of water.

Weaknesses

Godzilla was consistently caused pain or irritation by King Ghidorah's gravity beams, as well as the attacks of the Mechagodzilla army.
