I keep telling them. Godzilla isn't some dog I can train to do stupid tricks. Godzilla is a primal being. Not just powerful... but damn smart, too. This was part of my plan all along--thinning the herd. Above all, Godzilla is a predator. The greatest predator the world has ever spawned. And us... we may as well be minnows.

Godzilla (ゴジラ,   Gojira) is an amphibious reptilian kaiju who first appeared in the first issue of Godzilla: Heist. A menace to humanity, Godzilla's extreme aggression made him easily manipulated by young thief Jaion "Jai" Kulkarni who lured Godzilla to Manila as a distraction while he robbed a casino before becoming involved in a more dangerous heist in London to steal Mechagodzilla, similarly manipulating Godzilla to carry this out. This culminated in Jai piloting Mechagodzilla against Godzilla in a colossal battle to try and kill the monster.

Name

Main article: Godzilla#Name.

Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ), comes from a combination of the Japanese approximation of "gorilla" (ゴリラ,   gorira), and kujira (クジラ), the Japanese word for "whale."

Development

In an interview with Godzilla.com, Kelsey Ramsey stated that while Toho had initial references for Godzilla's design, she "subconsciously [tried] to ode and take aspects from all the different Godzillas."[3]

Design

Godzilla overall resembles past incarnations of the character though has several unique features: the most obvious of these is having teal skin rather than gray or black skin. His skin is noticeably bumpy around his head and shoulders, he has large white teeth which are noticeable even when his mouth is closed and dorsal plates similar to that of the original Godzilla's in shape. His head also changes from different Godzilla incarnations, with the main three being Heisei, Final Wars, and Showa.

Personality

Godzilla is an extremely aggressive and vicious organism quick to anger even against things that pose him no true danger, with this exploitable high aggression being somewhat similar to the Godzilla from Godzilla Minus One. However, while this constant rage makes him easily exploitable, he is still capable of detecting greater threats to him and prioritising attack them, as seen when he walked back to London when he detected Mechagodzilla's activation.

He is additionally known to be attracted to neutrinos, whether naturally caused by large atmospheric anomalies created by cosmic rays or generated by man-made devices. It is also described as a predator that hunts down anything that it notices, with it using its claws to get Kappa into its mouth

Origins

Few details on Godzilla's origins are specified though there is some information on his past: he is known to have battled Anguirus in India sometime in the past in a battle that led to the death of Jai's grandfather and his natural territory is the Pacific Ocean, having rarely ventured far away from the Pacific prior to the events of Godzilla: Heist.

History

Godzilla: Heist

Godzilla: Heist #1

Godzilla appeared in Manila as he destroyed part of a casino, which caused all of the people there to evacuate. Jaion Kulkarni, however, used this opportunity to get close to the vault with 90 million dollars, making sure to keep Godzilla distracted with his drones. Once there, he used the drones to get Godzilla baited enough to use the atomic breath to destroy it, with the drone flashing a large light to Godzilla while being in front of the vault. Jaion then got all of the money and tried to leave, but was stopped and faced with Godzilla, who destroyed all of the drones that distracted him. He was then indirectly saved by the military as they tried to stop Godzilla's rampage. As Jaion then left to retrieve the device that sent neutrinos in the area, something that attracted Godzilla's attention, as he then left, which also marked when Godzilla departure as it then left the city disappearing into the South China sea.

Godzilla is later seen in the Thames river leading to London, as he swam over to the location because of the neutrinos he sensed there.

Godzilla: Heist #2

As Godzilla rose from the Thames, it ripped out the Ferris Wheel in front of it and threw it into the city, letting out a roar of anger in front of the Big Ben. The main cast then proceeded to get on a helicopter and made their way to Godzilla, as Jaion prepared a weapon that fired a laser to get Godzilla's focus on them. The monster, in rage, followed them around the city, causing multiple buildings to collapse and citizens to flee in terror, before it fired its atomic breath at the helicopter. It missed them and hit a building that collapsed right onto the helicopter causing it to fall to the ground. Godzilla then came over to the location of the crash, as it stared at them, before missiles were then fired at its back by a fighter jet, forcing it to focus its attention on the jet. It then refocused its attention once more at the drones, which led it to the Ministry of Defense. Once it reached the building, it let out a single atomic breath that destroyed it in one go, as huge fire raged from its ruins.

Godzilla: Heist #3

Anguirus and Godzilla rose from the waters of Visakhapatnam, India, decades ago, in their effort to best one another during the fight. Anguirus grabbed a shipping container, and hurled it at Godzilla only to be unaffected by it. This did annoy Godzilla enough to use the atomic breath on Anguirus and knocked him out, which made Godzilla the winner.

At the present, Godzilla is taking all of the attacks the British military has thrown at it: whether it be from the guns from the ground or the missiles that were fired from the fighter jets, nothing worked. As Godzilla took all the fire, it looked down as it sensed a signal that Jainon set up to get it to attack. Godzilla then fired an atomic breath that dug straight into the signal's location making a large hole for the protagonist's group to go through. It then looked down into the hole and noticed Kappa, Beta, and Chi, as all three panicked, starting to descend down the shaft to Mechagodzilla's location in a frenzy. Godzilla then reached out of its claws into the hole, and grabbed on to the rope Kappa was using as it tugged her into its mouth to be eaten.

Godzilla: Heist #4

Godzilla is shown in a backstory reveal causing a huge tidal wave where Jaion's mom lived, which was in Visakhapatnam, India.

In the present, when it attacked Britain, it walked down to the coast, as a fighter jet commented that they will try to maintain that, only to horrified when Godzilla turned back to the city in hopes of finding what caused the new signal, which was where Mechagodzilla was.

As Jaionon and Alpha pilot mechagodzilla to leave the base, they run into Godzilla.

Godzilla: Heist #5

Godzilla was facing off against Mechagodzilla as it charged right at its doppelganger, giving it a shoulder tackle and then a tail strike that sent it flying. It slowly stomped its way over to Mechagodzilla, who proceeded to fire off a beam attack that stunned Godzilla with enough time to get Jaion's friend, Alpha, out of Mechagodzilla and to safety. Mechagodzilla then ran over to an uninhabited area near the outskirts of the city to mitigate any civilian damage from their fight. Godzilla followed Mechagodzilla to these outskirts, and then used its atomic breath to tear Mechagodzilla's arm clean off. Mechagodzilla then rushed at Godzilla as the ladder grabbed the former's arm with both hands to stop it, only to be counterattacked in the chest by a bunch of missiles from Mechagodzilla's own chest. Godzilla still grabbed on to Mechagodzilla's arm as Mechagodzilla laid down on the ground, placing its feet onto Godzilla's chest, and kicked Godzilla into the mountain. It then rammed into Godzilla with a shoulder tackle and immediately started barraging it with punches to the face. It then charged up a punch with more power, hoping to finish Godzilla off, only to fail as Godzilla caught the punch in it's jaws and ripped the arm out; that arm, however, exploded right in it's face, though it remained unaffected and more mad. Godzilla then faced Mechagodzilla near a cliff, before it charged and sent them both into the ocean. Once they both entered the water, Jaion started a countdown that will designate the self-destruction of Mechagodzilla into a large explosion, and the ladder hit Godzilla with a tail swipe before getting teared into by The King of the Monsters. Despite that though, the self-destruction sequence was carried out to its fullest, and Godzilla was caught near the radius, its injuries critical as an eyeball came out of its socket also with it multiple injuries on its leg and body.

Abilities

Atomic breath

Godzilla possesses extraordinarily powerful atomic breath with highly destructive properties and is Godzilla's most devastating attack. It is shown easily destroying buildings such as the Ministry of Defence, drilling into the ground below the destroyed Ministry, and a single use of the attack kills Anguirus in a flashback. Jai states that an experiment showed that the shockwaves caused by Godzilla's atomic breath are powerful enough to destroy sensors used to measure the megawatts generated by atomic bomb tests, and the beam is powerful enough to cut off one of Mechagodzilla's arms like "a katana through ground beef".

Physical abilities

Godzilla is shown constantly throughout the comics to easily break buildings just by walking through them with little to no effort. He was also able to cause huge tidal waves in settlements near the coast just by swimming. Godzilla shows impressive dexterity for a creature of his size, being able to grab a rope much smaller than him to drag Kappa into his mouth and eat her.

Amphibiousness

Godzilla is naturally amphibious in nature and perfectly home both on land and in water, naturally living in the Pacific Ocean, swimming through the River Thames and showing impressive speed on land as well as battling Mechagodzilla underwater.

Intelligence

He is able to intercept attacks, an example being when he caught Mechagodzilla's charged punch with his mouth. Another case is when he was able to find the three mercenaries deep into the hole it made, and started hunting them. It used its claws to drag one of them out using the rope the three were using to descent, and pulled them up to it's mouth.

Durability

Godzilla is shown consistently shrugging off attacks from the military, as shown with none of the weapons doing much of anything to him. This also extends to its fight with Mechagodzilla, whose basic punches did nothing to Godzilla, and its beam attack was only able to stun Godzilla for awhile.

Weaknesses

His main weakness is that critical damage that is inflicted on him incapacitates him. As shown from the self-destruction explosion Mechagodzilla used to take Godzilla down, it incapacitated the ladder with critical injuries shown all over it's body from the explosion.

Trivia

  • This Godzilla is one of the very few Godzilla incarnations in any media to eat people, devouring Kappa in issue 3 of Godzilla: Heist. The only other Godzilla incarnation known to have eaten people is the Dark Horse Godzilla who eats Professor Elmer Mason in Godzilla #12. However, the textless retailer incentive cover for Godzilla: Monsters & Protectors #3 also depicts Godzilla eating people and the Baby Godzillas in GODZILLA also eat people despite Godzilla himself never doing so.
  • Curiously, Godzilla only kills one named character (Kappa) despite being the villainous kaiju of Godzilla: Heist while his foe Mechagodzilla kills three (Beta, Chi and Bender).
  • Despite being the third incarnation of the character to attack London, this Godzilla is the first to attack the city in a modern setting.
