Anguirus (アンギラス,   Angirasu) is a species of giant Ankylosaurus-like kaiju who appears in the continuity of the GODZILLA anime trilogy. Though their only presence in the films is a skull in GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters, the prequel novel GODZILLA: Monster Apocalypse chronicles Anguirus I, II, and IV menacing Asia, South Africa, and the United States. I and IV are killed by Hedorah and Godzilla, respectively.

Name

Main article: Anguirus#Name.

Anguirus' Japanese name, Angirasu (アンギラス), comes from the Japanese spelling of the name of the dinosaur genus Ankylosaurus (アンキロサウルス,   Ankirosaurusu), upon which the monster's design is based. The name was chosen from several names proposed by employees of Toho during production of Godzilla Raids Again.

Design

What little can be seen of Anguirus I in the opening prologue of GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters consists of a reptilian skull with an elongated snout full of sharp teeth. Strangely, the skull does not appear to have any of the traditional horns and fangs seen in other Anguirus incarnations. Whether Anguirus I possessed such features prior to being killed by Hedorah or simply lacked them altogether is unknown.

Little else is known about the appearance of the Anguirus species outside of it being quadrupedal and the presence of a protective carapace on the back, the latter seen on Anguirus IV. Both traits adhere to the traditional Anguirus design.

Personality

Like nearly all of the kaiju who appeared following Kamacuras's attack on Boston and New York City in May 1999, the Anguirus were generally aggressive monsters who made multiple attacks on humanity.

Anguirus IV joined up with Baragon II and Varan II while escaping from Godzilla, fleeing so desperately that none of the three kaiju intentionally attacked the human forces in Los Angeles. Once flight proved impossible, Anguirus IV fought to the death alongside Baragon II and Varan II against Godzilla.

Origins

At least four members of the Anguirus species emerged in the first half of the 21st century to menace or roam amongst humanity when enormous monsters suddenly appeared around the world. The first, Anguirus I, emerged from Siberia in 2005. The second, Anguirus II, appeared in South Africa in 2006. Nothing is known about the third individual, who was presumably dubbed Anguirus III. The fourth, Anguirus IV, emerged from the Pacific Ocean into Los Angeles in 2030 along with Baragon II and Varan II. Following its death, no other members of the Anguirus species was seen.

History

Reiwa era

GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters

During the prologue of the film narrated by Haruo Sakaki, a news report showcases the skeleton of Rodan I alongside Anguirus I's skull at the Great Wall of China. A news ticker states that the two monsters were slain by "Operation Hedorah," though the nature of Hedorah is not elaborated upon.

Abilities

Carapace

Anguirus IV was mentioned to have a carapace on its back, which had been partially destroyed by Godzilla. Whether it served an offensive purpose is unknown.

Amphibiousness

The Anguirus species is capable of moving both in water and on land, shown by Anguirus IV swimming through the ocean to escape Godzilla.

Weaknesses

Anguirus I was killed alongside Rodan I by the Chinese bioweapon Hedorah. Anguirus IV was later killed alongside Baragon II and Varan II by a blast of atomic breath from Godzilla that obliterated all three monsters and the city of Los Angeles.

Books

GODZILLA: Monster Apocalypse

The first Anguirus emerged from the frozen soil of Siberia in November of 2005 and traveled southeast to Beijing, where it joined Rodan. Both monsters were exterminated by the Chinese bioweapon Hedorah,[2] but a second Anguirus, denoted "Anguirus II," emerged in South Africa the following year. A fourth Anguirus appeared from the Pacific Ocean in Los Angeles alongside Baragon II and Varan II in 2030, so desperate to escape Godzilla that they neglected to attack the city; in the ensuing battle all three monsters were killed by his atomic breath, with the city itself also obliterated.[3]

GODZILLA: Project Mechagodzilla

Anguirus was mentioned twice when discussing kaiju rivalries, with Anguirus I's rivalry with Rodan I and Anguirus IV being killed by Godzilla both being described.[1] (NOTE: This reference in particular needs to be checked with the original book since I got it from a translated version of GMPG chapter 6)

Comics

GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters

This adaptation of GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters once again recaps the deaths of Anguirus I and Rodan I at the hands of Hedorah, though unlike the film, the manga explicitly states that Hedorah was responsible for killing the two monsters.
