— Zhenjin Khan commanding Gigan and Megalon (Godzilla: Rage Across Time #1) |
Zhenjin Khan (ゼンジン・カーン Zenjin Kān) is the main antagonist of IDW Publishing's 2016 comic Godzilla: Rage Across Time #1. The commanding officer of a Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274, he is in fact a disguised Nebulan who controls the monsters Gigan and Megalon. He is a fictionalized version of Zhenjin, the second son of Kublai Khan and crown prince of the Yuan dynasty.
Name
The real Zhenjin's name means "true gold" in Chinese (真金 Zhēnjīn) and was given to him by the Buddhist monk Haiyun. In Godzilla: Rage Across Time, he is erroneously referred to with the title khan, despite never achieving the rank of khagan in real life. This may have been a result of Khan being mistaken for a surname, as it is possessed by his father Kublai Khan.
Personality
In a declaration before his army's final confrontation with Godzilla and Japanese forces, Zhenjin described the Mongol invasion of Japan as a means to further the Nebulans goal of "true peace" throughout the world. Daichi, however, characterized his goals as "bringing about the total destruction of the Japanese people and our culture."

Godzilla: Rage Across Time
"Feudal Japan"
In the year 1274, Zhenjin Khan was sent by Kublai Khan, ruler of the Yuan Empire, to wipe out Japan entirely. With a fleet of 900 ships carrying 40,000 Mongol warriors and the two ancient monsters Gigan and Megalon under his command, the Dragon-Master arrived in Hakata Bay, where the enemy had summoned all able-bodied warriors to fend him off. While Daichi sent off his greatest pupils to summon Yamato no Orochi to save Japan, Zhenjin and his forces engaged the Japanese forces in the shallows of the bay. As the heroes rode towards their destination, Zhenjin breached the defense line, his monsters knocking down defense towers and his troops chipping away at the enemy warriors. His forces set fire to the land and pushed back the waning Japanese troops towards the Suda fortress, where the shogun and his surviving warriors had begun to regroup. Megalon's attack on the fortress, however, was suddenly interrupted by a fearsome monster of legend: Godzilla, who Akio and Gorou had lured to the battlefield after he slayed Orochi. While his monster pawns engaged with the beast, Zhenjin and his forces continued their offense on the Japanese. Holding up a mind-control device, Zhenjin commanded Gigan and Megalon to attack together. The duo complied, turning the tide against Godzilla, only for an enchanted arrow fired by Akio obliterated his control device in a brilliant explosion. Zhenjin could only watch as the King of the Monsters scared off his freed minions before charging into Hakata Bay, ultimately trampling the Khan underfoot.

Trivia
- Apart from never achieving the rank of khan, the real Zhenjin was not involved in either Mongol invasion of Japan, instead dying in 1286 of alcoholism before he could succeed Kublai.
