The Megavolt Monsters (メガボルト・モンスター,   Megaboruto Monsutā) are aquatic reptilian monsters that appeared in the 1978 Godzilla episode, "The Megavolt Monster."

Name

The Megavolt Monsters' name stems from the word "megavolt", which refers to one million volts.

Design

The Megavolt Monsters are blue, quadrupedal, reptilian monsters with a pair of white horns atop their heads; curved, beak-like snouts with a pair of lime green tusks and long, forked tongues; lime green lower jaws and undersides; four toes on each of their feet; and tails with blue flukes at their tips. The Megavolt Monsters are constantly covered in a yellow aura, likely due to their electrical properties, with the glow only going away once they run out of energy.

Origins

The Megavolt Monsters are deep sea aquatic reptiles living within the Valley Trench, only surfacing when individuals come near their territory. They are later revealed to get their powers from an electrical rock outcropping hidden within an air pocket under the ocean, explaining why they live near the trench.

History

Godzilla

"The Megavolt Monster"

One evening, a large ship crossing the ocean was attacked by one of the Megavolt Monsters, causing its internal systems to go haywire and eventually resulting in the oil tanker being ignited, forcing the crew to abandon ship. The Calico and its crew entered the area to investigate the cause of the attack. After noticing electricity flickering across the waves, Quinn and Brock went into the depths using the ships bathysphere, but were soon attacked by one of the undersea menaces. The Megavolt Monster fired its electrical bolts at the bathysphere's line, causing it to swiftly sink. Meanwhile, the monster then turned its attention towards the Calico and attacked it by coiling its body and tail around the ship, draining it of energy. Luckily, Godzilla managed to force the beast to retreat.

Unknown to everyone, a bubble of air existed at the bottom of the sea, maintained by the strange power source, which was a rock. Godzooky dove into the sea to rescue his friends, but ended up only worsening the problem by throwing himself in danger when he, Quinn, and Brock were cornered by two more Megavolt Monsters. Knowing that their friends were in trouble, Captain Majors and Pete rode inside of Godzilla's air-tight hands to the bottom of the sea, allowing the three of them to rescue their friends. Once there, Godzilla confronted the two horned fiends. Using his flames against them, Godzilla managed to distract the creatures while the others carried out a plot to destroy their power source, breaking the air bubble in the process.

Once the source was gone and Godzilla drained his foes of energy, they managed to escape, but the larger individual from before attacked them above the trench. The still-massive Megavolt Monster charged full speed and forced Godzilla to release the bathysphere. Godzooky tried to carry it up himself as Godzilla fought the beast. Soon, like its kindred, this monster also ran out of its energy for good and was forced to retreat.

Abilities

Physical abilities

After emerging from the ocean, one of the Megavolt Monsters climbed onto the Calico and began constricting around the vessel with his body and tail. When fighting Godzilla, they were fast enough to sidestep two blasts of his fire breath. One of the Megavolt Monsters attempted to jump on him, only to be locked in a chokehold. He later used his tail to constrict around Godzilla's neck, attempting to strangle him, but to little effect being pried off moments later. Not long after, the Megavolt Monster barreled into Godzilla's chest and grappled with him.

Electric bolts

The Megavolt Monsters' electric bolt attack

The Megavolt Monsters can fire bolts of electricity from their horns, tusks, and tails. The rate at which they can be fired is rather quick and often happens in multiple bursts. One of the Megavolt Monsters used his electric bolts on an oil tanker, enveloping the watercraft with white electricity while causing its internal monitors to go out of control, before eventually causing explosions on the vessel after striking an oil tank. The surface above the Valley Trench is regularly seen to have electrical charges flickering across its waves due to the Megavolt Monsters. In one instance, one of the Megavolt Monsters was able to create a barrier of electricity by firing it from his tail, blocking the path to a cave for Quinn and Brock.

These bolts were also capable of cutting the line of the Calico's bathysphere, eliminating the smoke cloud caused by Godzooky, shattering boulders, and beam-locking with Godzilla's fire breath. Blasts from their tails were strong enough to push back Godzilla's hands, but left no lasting damage on the reptilian. Similarly, blasts to his chest received little reaction. However, once they fought in water, blasts to Godzilla's face resulted in the reptilian groaning in pain and covering it.

Electromagnetic pulse

The Megavolt Monsters' electromagnetic pulse attack

The Megavolt Monsters can release an electromagnetic pulse from their bodies to repel enemies. Dr. Quinn Darian theorized that the Megavolt Monsters bodies were "radiating millions of volts of energy" upon being attacked by one, with its presence also shorting out the bathysphere's radio. Brock Borden further theorized that if the Megavolt Monsters got close enough to them, they would be electrocuted instantly. One individual used his electromagnetic pulse to stun and force Godzilla to release him on two occasions, once while above water and the other while in an air pocket under the ocean.

Electricity absorption

The Megavolt Monsters can absorb any form of electricity, which enables them to grow in size and power. After constricting around the Calico, one of the Megavolt Monsters began sapping the ship's energy to re-energize itself. The source of their electricity comes from a certain rock outcropping within an air bubble under the ocean, which they sap the energy from to keep their electrical attributes.

Amphibiousness

Despite being electrified, the Megavolt Monsters are both able to remain underwater, spending their time in the Valley Trench. They appeared to be just as competent at swimming as Godzilla was, matching his pace underwater. When one of the Megavolt Monsters fought Godzilla on his own, he was swift enough to quickly maneuver into a ramming position after being swung away, slamming into Godzilla. After shrinking from his energy loss, the Megavolt Monster quickly sped away into a chasm.

Bioluminescence

The Megavolt Monsters bodies continuously glowed yellow as a result of their electrical properties, only losing the glow after using up all their electricity.

Durability

The Megavolt Monsters can survive their own electricity, which they obtained by being zapped by a certain rock outcropping within an air pocket under the ocean. In combat, one of the Megavolt Monsters was perfectly fine after breaking free of Godzilla's chokehold, and was not even disoriented upon being swung around and flung away.

Weaknesses

The electricity of the Megavolt Monsters is finite and, once depleted, the monsters must return to the rock outcropping that acts as their power source to recharge. When this rock was destroyed, they eventually ran out of their electricity for good and shrunk, forcing them to retreat. In combat, one of the Megavolt Monsters was manhandled by Godzilla and unable to break free of his grip physically, having to rely on its electromagnetic pulse to get Godzilla to let it go. In their second fight, the same situation occurred where one of the Megavolt Monsters had to use its pulse to free itself. They temporarily quit pursuing Dr. Quinn Darian and Brock Borden after Godzooky fell in front of them, walking a far distance away before coming back to charge at them.
