"Beyond Logic" (論理を超えて Ronri o Koete) is the 10th episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and its season 1 finale. Directed by Andy Goddard and written by Chris Black, it premiered on Apple TV+ on January 12, 2024.
Plot
Dr. Keiko Randa helps an awestruck Cate to her feet and leads her out of the Brambleboar's territory. Cate stresses that they need to find her friends, prompting Keiko to ask if her husband is among them.
In Tokyo, Hiroshi explains to Kentaro that he went to the desert to draw out a Titan, although he didn't know it would specifically be Godzilla. Doing so would open a rift, proving Hollow Earth's existence and vindicating his parents. He believes that if Monarch had put more faith into them, G-Day might have been prevented and Cate might still be alive. Kentaro, however, blames himself and Hiroshi for her death—because he believed in his father and his father only cared about Monarch. Hiroshi denies this, but admits he was wrong to hide that world from Kentaro, and asks for his help in learning how to co-exist with the Titans. Kentaro agrees, but only if he can answer why he chose to live a double life. When Hiroshi acts defensively, his son leaves.
Keiko believes Cate is part of a rescue party that followed her beacon, but her confused reaction makes her realize the truth. Before Cate can explain who she is, they hear rustling, prompting Keiko to draw her bow. May comes into view and embraces Cate, while Shaw calls out to Keiko. She no longer recognizes his voice and he hesitates behind a tree. He asks how long she thinks she's been gone—57 days—then explains that he led a recon mission there in 1962, and though he thought he only spent a week there, emerged to find 20 years had passed. He struggles to hold back tears as he tells her 33 more years have passed since then. She quickly determines the cause—gravitational distortion warping space-time—before the weight of it overwhelms her. Cate and May confirm that he's telling the truth, and he finally comes into view to hold her. She asks about Bill, and he's forced to admit he died long ago. Sorrowful, she asks about Hiroshi next, and Cate tells her who she is.
At Monarch's headquarters, Deputy Director Natalia Verdugo relays to Tim that the gamma ray emissions around the Hollow Earth portals have stabilized, though remain high. He asks about Michelle Duvall, who remains missing, and the signal Dr. Barnes detected, which she declares low-priority amidst the current crisis. Tim is outraged, particularly given all that Lee, Cate, and May know about their predicament, and believes that if Monarch can't act to save them, then Shaw was right about the organization. At that, she asks if he's ready to do his job again or have his medical leave extended indefinitely.
Keiko leads Lee, Cate, and May to her camp, and he admires the beacon she recovered from his mission, which she has reconfigured to send out a signal. Cate lets her know that Monarch is still around 2015 and Hiroshi was part of it. She asks Cate to describe him. Cate characterizes him as a "family man" who forged his own path when Monarch tried to stop him, while May struggles to control her reaction. Shaw asks Keiko if she can return the beacon to its original configuration, allowing them to attract a Titan and return home.
Hiroshi removes his belongings from the apartment in Tokyo while Hiroshi and Emiko sit in silence; there are few, as Emiko, believing he was dead, has already given most of them away. He tells her that he plans to travel to San Francisco for a few days to handle his divorce. She tells him that she and Kentaro dreamed about the day he would turn up home after he disappeared, and no matter what he did to her, Kentaro deserves a relationship with him. With that, she takes off her wedding ring and sets it atop the box of his things.
Keiko, Lee, Cate, and May struggle to carry the beacon up a hill. Kentaro heads to a bar, sketching a map of the portals to Hollow Earth on napkins, when he realizes it's the same bar where he took May on the first night they met. Tim approaches him, having been directed there by Emiko. They compare leg injuries and toast. Tim tells him about the signal, believing that Hiroshi might be able to tell them what it means.
Keiko and Lee stop to rest. He tells her she looks exactly as he's pictured her in all the years gone by, and she confesses she's been talking to him and Bill in her head nonstop. She asks how Bill died; Lee explains that he never came back from an expedition to an island trying to prove Hollow Earth existed, and in doing so saved Monarch. She asks him next what the future is like. He tells that although technology has evolved and humanity landed on the moon, the world is fundamentally the same.
Hiroshi is rewatching Bill's final message for him when Kentaro and Tim arrive. Tim shows him printouts of the signal, which he believes could be proof Cate is alive. Hiroshi is skeptical, but Kentaro offers to help him with his research as he asked if he helps find Cate first. Tim reveals he's resigned from Monarch—but their former organization isn't the only one with the resources they need.
Cate asks why the Titan's world looks so much like theirs, giving Keiko the opportunity to put forth her theory that where there are isn't the true realm, but an intermediary place she has named Axis Mundi. Cate catches the reference, impressing her, and asks next how there can be light in the sky if they're underground. Shaw questions if they really fell into this world, or simply entered it. By nightfall, they reach Shaw's pod, which he finds still in working order. As the prepare the beacon, attaching it to the pod, Keiko declares she's staying behind, feeling the world has left her behind and she would ruin Hiroshi's life if she suddenly reappeared. Cate refuses her, however, declaring an end to their family's curse. She agrees to come with them; they strap in and activate the beacon. Shaw explains to Cate how to see when a Titan is approaching and instructs her to tell them once it carries them 3,000 feet into the air. They hear a roar—and the Ion Dragon stomps into view, a major complication as it was already inside Axis Mundi, leaving the rift impassible. It flies towards them, but passes overhead as Cate reports another creature coming through the rift. On the Ion Dragon's next pass, it hits the pod with its tail, pulling wires apart and shutting off the gamma ray simulator. Shaw climbs out of the pod as the others protest, and struggles to reconnect the cables as the Ion Dragon lands before him and the other Titan starts to withdraw. He finally makes the connection, reactivating the beacon. The Ion Dragon roars at him... and Godzilla roars back.
The Ion Dragon flies towards the rift, then veers off as Godzilla emerges from it, eyeing the beacon. It attacks him from the side, catching him off guard, and bites his neck. He rips off part of its tail and throws it into a mountain. He charges his atomic breath as it lunges again, but it interrupts him with a spray of nacre. Vision impaired, he still manages to grab it and blast it with his ray. He finishes it off by spinning it around, ripping its wing off in the process, and hurling it into the rift. The rift starts to pull in the pod as Lee runs after it. He manages to climb it and grabs Keiko's hand as they go airborne. Realizing he's too heavy to pull up, he thanks her for everything and lets go. The pod continues to climb without him. May shuts the lid of the pod and tells Keiko to strap in. Cate grabs hold of her hand and spots Godzilla out the window before they pass through the rift.
The pod surfaces on a tarmac, surrounded by trucks and a strange device. Uniformed men lead Keiko, Cate, and May to a hangar, where Kentaro and Hiroshi greet them. Keiko hangs back until Hiroshi recognizes her, and she holds him. Cate tells Kentaro who Keiko is. They are interrupted by Brenda Holland, Tim trailing behind her, who tells them it's time for their medical inspection and debriefing. She tells May that Apex Cybernetics has been footing the bill for the effort to bring them back, and Kentaro lets slip that two years have passed since Kazakhstan. Sirens blare as they move further inside, and Kong, stomping through the jungle of Skull Island, nears the facility, beats his chest, and roars.
