- On September 30, the black dwarf star dubbed Gorath is discovered by the Palomar Observatory. The Japanese spacecraft JX-1 Hayabusa, already en route to the orbit of Saturn, obliges the call to observe and gather data on the encroaching star. (Gorath)
- A giant ape dubbed King Kong is discovered on a remote island and is transported to New York. Eventually the creature escapes and climbs the World Trade Center, only to be shot down by a group of helicopters and presumed dead. (King Kong)
