The Jurassic is a geological period in Earth's history. It is the second period in the Mesozoic Era, spanning 58 million years from the end of the Triassic Period about 201.4 million years ago (Mya) to the beginning of the Cretaceous Period about 143.1 Mya.
In the real world
- Archosaurs and other reptiles continue to be the dominant animals on Earth, as they have been since the Triassic Period.
- Following the Triassic–Jurassic extinction event, dinosaurs become the dominant terrestrial animals, and several varieties reach massive sizes. Several iconic dinosaurs appear in this period, including Brontosaurus, Dilophosaurus, Diplodocus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus. Another dinosaur of this time is Limusaurus, which will receive the same namе as the fictional animal from Skull Island more than 150 million years later. The first birds emerge, evolving from a lineage of theropod dinosaurs.
- Crocodylomorphs are the only pseudosuchians that are alive in the Jurassic and onwards, and begin diversifying to fill a variety of different niches during this period.
- Pterosaurs such as Rhamphorhynchus continue to be the dominant animals in the air, although they would not reach particularly large sizes.
- Various groups of marine reptiles continue to rule the seas. The most prominent of these in the Jurassic are the plesiosaurs, including the long-necked plesiosauroids (such as Plesiosaurus) and the short-necked pliosaurs (such as Liopleurodon). Ichthyosaurs also inhabit the oceans at this time.
- Mammaliaformes, including true mammals, begin to diversify, though are kept out of certain niches occupied by dinosaurs and other reptiles.
- The supercontinent of Pangaea rifts, separating into two supercontinents: Laurasia and Gondwana in the north and south, respectively.
In fiction
- A rare marine reptile inhabits the sea, surviving the extinction event which claimed countless other creatures. This is believed to include the trilobite. (Godzilla, 1954)[note 1]
- The plesiosaur lives in the coastal zone of the British Isles. Millions of years later, a drawing and skeletal diagram of this reptile will go on display in the British Museum.[1] (The Giant Behemoth)
- Skull Island, inhabited by the ancestors of giant stegosaurs, sauropods and carnosaurs, becomes isolated from the continents. (Kong Reborn)
