The Precambrian began from the formation of the Earth around 4,600 million years ago (Mya) and lasted until 538.8 ± 0.6 Mya.
In the real world
- The Earth and the other planets of the solar system form around the Sun. Earth itself forms around 4.5 billion years ago. Jupiter is the first of the planets to finish forming, and is believed to have began rapidly moving through the solar system before an orbital resonance with Saturn pulled it back to its present orbital position.
- Shortly after the Earth forms, it is struck by a Mars-sized planet named Theia. The impact destroys Theia, liquefies the Earth, and launches vast quantities of material into orbit around the young planet, which eventually coalesces into the Moon.
- The first living organisms on Earth emerge at least 3.48 billion years ago.
- Geologic activity during the Cryogenian period causes the Sturtian and Marinoan glaciations, spanning the time between 717 and 632 million years ago; during this time, Earth is almost completely frozen over.
- The Precambrian supereon nears its end with the Ediacaran Period (635–538.8 Mya). The first complex multicellular organisms widely accepted as such arise in this time. The end of the Ediacaran through the beginning of the Cambrian Period sees the Cambrian explosion, during which most major animal phyla appear.
In fiction
- A species of crustacean that lived in colonies on the ocean floor exists at around this time. In approximately 539 million years, one of these colonies would become Destoroyah. Around 538,800,000 years ago is the latest time that this could be taking place, due to Destoroyah's status as a Precambrian creature. (Godzilla vs. Destoroyah)
