Monarch: Legacy of Monsters
In 2017, Outpost 18 was stationed outside of the storm walls surrounding Skull Island, serving as Monarch's monitoring outpost as they oversaw the Apex Cybernetics operation to rescue Cate Randa, May Olowe-Hewitt, and Lee Shaw from Axis Mundi. After Cate, May, and Keiko Randa were rescued, they were brought to Outpost 18 for medical observation. In the command center, Deputy Director Natalia Verdugo, Tim, and Brenda Holland were left to deal with the fallout of Kong's rampage at the Apex outpost on the island after the rescue mission as they tried to determine the cause of Kong's unpredictable actions. Both Cate and Keiko repeatedly voiced their interest in returning to the island and opening another rift to rescue Shaw, only to be rebuffed due to the dangers it posed; Cate nevertheless convinced her father Hiroshi, half-brother Kentaro, and May to mount their own rescue operation. May was sent to stall Tim in the command center and got him to rave about Outpost 18's impressive capabilities while the Randas commandeered one of the vessel's inflatable boats; once May reconvened with them, they departed for Skull Island to rescue Shaw themselves. Later, as Tim was showing Keiko around the ship, she was shown surveillance footage in the command center taken from Kong's rampage in which she noticed a small creature that escaped through the rift. Recognizing the creature, a Scarab, from her past, she realized it was the source of Kong's wrath and knew they could not risk opening the rift again. After Verdugo was informed of the Randas' rescue mission, she, Tim, and Keiko boarded helicopters to stop them. While Shaw was successfully rescued, a massive monster, Titan X, also escaped the rift, killing Verdugo in the process. "Cause and Effect"
In the wake of Verdugo's demise, Tim reluctantly accepted position as Outpost 18's captain, being next in the chain of command. Upon arrival, Shaw argued over their next course of action, though Tim ultimately conceded that they should follow the Titan as Shaw requested. Another squabble followed between Tim and Shaw after Titan X increased speed, as Tim did not want to risk the lives of the 200 crewmembers aboard by overheating the engines, which would leave them defenseless. However, after realizing Titan X was headed for the Strait of Malacca and following an impassioned plea from Keiko, Tim gave the order to increase speed. Shaw next inquired about the vessel's armament, only to be informed Outpost 18 was merely a research vessel. At Keiko's suggestion, Hiroshi attempted to modify the ship's drone to emit an infrasonic signal to draw the Titan's attention, though the endeavor was unsuccessful as Titan X destroyed the drone and maintained course towards civilian vessels. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to the crew, a Scarab that latched onto one of the helicopters on Skull Island had infiltrated the ship, where it killed a Monarch officer before being caught by Cate. With help from Kentaro and May, the trio were able to subdue the creature, though it released a sonic cry that attracted the attention of Titan X. As Titan X began heading directly towards Outpost 18, Shaw realized it was after the Scarab, which, while injured by the others, was still alive. The creature was wrapped in a towel and loaded onto an inflatable boat just as Outpost 18's engines finally overheated, leaving the vessel stalled. The inflatable boat was launched with Shaw at the helm as he diverted Titan X away from their main vessel before releasing the small creature, narrowly escaping with his life while saving Outpost 18. "Resonance"
Outpost 18 was brought to the Port of Tokyo for engineers to evaluate and repair the damage to the engines. Shortly thereafter, agents of Apex Cybernetics stormed the vessel, led by Jason Trissop, to upgrade the ship's sensor system in efforts to help them locate Titan X. Tim attempted to assert authority as the vessel's captain, only for Trissop to inform him that his team had been temporarily granted operational control of Outpost 18, which Monarch Director Barris later confirmed to the incredulous Tim over a video call. "Secrets"
Capabilities
Speed
According to Tim, the vessel can safely reach a top speed of nearly 40 knots. However, while it is capable of exceeding 50 knots, pushing beyond top speed can risk overheating the engines.
Zodiacs
Outpost 18 has several inflatable Zodiac boats that can be launched from its sea dock.
Drone
Outpost 18 is equipped with an autonomous aerial drone, though the drone itself has no weapons and only a camera.
Helipad
The vessel features a large helipad.
Other features
Outpost 18 is connected to the worldwide G-TASS satellite system.
