First appearance Gamera the Brave

The Red Stone (赤い石,   Akai Ishi) is a magical object introduced in the 2006 Kadokawa film Gamera the Brave. It was discovered along with Toto's egg 33 years after the disappearance of Avant Gamera, and it is essential for empowering Toto.

Properties

In 2006, Toru Aizawa discovered Toto's egg along with the stone on the Crimson Island (緋島,   Hijima), the detached remnant of Cape Daio following the 1973 incident. Along with the Crimson Pearls, the stone has played vital roles in Toto's growth. The red pearls may glow in response to Toto's emotion.[1]

In Friends: Gamera the Brave, the children of Nagoya impulsively participated in the relay to deliver the stone to Toto even though they couldn't understand their own motivations and vocations and objectives. They also unaccountably knew the name "Toto" and used it as a slogan. Additionally, the children also regained that the light from the stone is ancient far beyond their births, and Toru Aizawa understood the true identity of Gamera by touching the stone.[2]

In The Story of Me and Toto, Toru believed that the red stone might have its own consciousness, wanting to protect Toto and leading to their meeting. It is also noted that the more children touch the red stone, the stronger it glows.[3]

History

Crimson Pearls

The last Crimson Pearl owned by Osamu Nishio, which was subsequently given to Mai.

Following the self-destruction of Avant Gamera to destroy the flock of Original Gyaos in 1973, the Crimson Pearls (緋色真珠,   Hi-iro Shinju) were simultaneously discovered in the Shima region. It was found only in 1973, and the scientist Amamiya has speculated them as solidified energy of Avant Gamera.

It became the focus the public attention and promoted tourism as local souvenirs, and their proceeds were essential in the post-disaster reconstruction of the region. Some locals have also kept the items as personal omamori, as Osamu Nishio gave it to his daughter Mai prior to her surgery, and refereed the items to as the "Shards of a Guardian Angel" (守護天使の欠片,   Shugo-tenshi no Kakera) that would bring fortunes and protections.[4]

Trivia

  • A similar concept was previously introduced in Gamera vs. Barugon: Comic Version, in which Barugon, who hatched from an egg within the skeletal remains of the previous Barugon, generates gem-like substances so-called "souls", and rapidly grows by collecting them. Akin to the Red Stone and the Crimson Pearls, these were also composed of a large and important one, and multiple smaller ones.[5]
  • At the conclusion of The Last Hope, the stone was seen along with Toto's egg.
