I will say that I definitely knew who I wanted to win right off the bat. I remember in second grade there was a friend of mine who had a definitive idea of who he thought would win in a fight, Godzilla or King Kong, and I remember being on the playground and arguing with him about it, and I felt like he was totally wrong, by the way. And so in a weird roundabout way, this movie is like the most ridiculous way of winning a fight with a friend of yours in second grade. But now I finally have the last word.
Adam Wingard is the only Monsterverse director to have directed more than one film in the series. Moreover, he is only the second American to direct a Godzilla film, after Michael Dougherty.
In 2013, Peter Jackson approached Adam Wingard with an offer to direct a sequel to his 2005 King Kong remake, called Skull Island, which would have been written by Simon Barrett and produced by Mary Parent.[3] According to Wingard, the film was never made because it "was set up at Universal, and the King Kong rights somehow ended up at Warner Bros." Parent would go on to produce Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, while Barrett would co-write the latter.
Coincidentally, a Netflix TV series titled Skull Island would be released in 2023, sharing continuity with the Monsterverse.
Wingard reiterated his love for Godzilla vs. Hedorah and Godzilla vs. Destoroyah in an interview for the Japanese magazine Eiga Hiho, adding that he dislikes TriStar Pictures' GODZILLA.[5]
Adam Wingard stated in a 2024 IGN Fan Fest interview that his favorite color is pink, and that he would have pink fairy lights up in rooms he was in.[6] His color preference would also play a role in the design for Godzilla's Evolved form in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.[6]
